Solomon Byrd isn’t the first name mentioned when people talk about the defensive line but he had four tackles, three for loss, a sack and a forced fumble last night.
Byrd’s backup, Romello Height, also had three tackles.
Jamil Muhammad has started at rush end the past two games ahead of Anthony Lucas, the transfer from Texas A&M. Muhammad had a sack and forced fumble last night. Bear Alexander had a deflected pass and two tackles.
- Defensive end Jack Sullivan, a transfer from Purdue, has played three games without a tackle. He gets playing time from the coaches so they must like what they see. Korey Foreman also did not have a tackle last night but he is third string so he plays less.
- USC is ranked No. 5 in both the Top 25 polls, up one spot from the previous week.
Recruiting DL’s from transfer portal exclusively vs HS doesn’t seem to be sustainable.

Why is it not sustainable? It is working out well with Bear, Byrd, Lucas, Barr, Muhammad and Company. Beats Korey Foreman. And you have the added benefit of not having to kiss the ass of some 17 year old from Mater Dei or Bosco.

Not only that, Bear and Lucas are both sophs. They have made the freshman adjustments and have hit a great stride this season. Riley has brought in some good high schoolers, so to complement them with the portal is really a good thing. Riley should just send a letter to MD telling them if anyone is SERIOUSLY interested in playing ball and being a Trojan, call him. He should let them know there are no signing bonuses.

Or are there? 😉

I suspect the ultimate plan is to develop players from HS, though Riley was left with Helton’s dumpster fire and had to do what he could to get better fast. Muhammed and Bear have been huge improvements on the DL, which IMO is the most improved part of the team.

They also have cleaned up leaving their rushing lanes, which was an issue versus SJSU.

Glad Bohn’s case didn’t rise to this level. They must have some serious evidence in this case.

BTW, as the lawyers here will attest, “suspends” only means they are getting their ducks in order before canning him.

Well SoCal, to answer your rhetorical question, Mr. Tucker has been trying to get the woman who filed to complaint to show up at the school to speak about rape and sexual harassment. He then had multiple conversations with her and had no issues having those conversations taped because he thought the calls were between adults and therefore consent was implied according to his confession-er, admissions to his boss, the AD. Well, with Larry Nassar still haunting the school and a $35 million dollar contract still owed to Mr. Tucker, looks like coach exercised his “get me out of here” card because no man in his right mind would admit to masturbating on a phone call with a rape prevention advocate unless he was trying to get himself fired. . .I guess that’s one way to punish donors who give more NIL money to the basketball coach instead of the football program.
That’s what I’m hearing.

By the way, I think it would behoove Scott Wolf to find some food stamps (because I know he wouldn’t be caught dead with an EBT card) and pay for a subscription to PPF or any fine website that has win/block rate statistics. He would be surprised to see that “third string” Korey Foreman has some of the highest win pass rush rates on the team and was responsible for a holding penalty and two qb pressures. Now his run defense is still suspect but he’s not a complete cadaver out there.

That D-Line is putting more pressure on the QB than it did last year. Last year they were always a day late and a dollar short with the exception of Tui. They also have Telani hopefully coming back and he was good last year. I’m not sure what is wrong with him but he is not even suiting up.
The 2nd string O-Line didn’t play well against Stanford.

One deep?– Is that a football recipe for a championship?

Let’s face it, pardner —no starter can get hurt on the d-line, in the backfield, on the o-line —in other words, we need a miracle season.

Every year there is a team that does get a miracle season. It’s the team that wins the NC. Why not SC? It always helps when Lady Luck is your girlfriend.
But it is also true that great teams make their own luck.

Grinch and Nua need to spend a lot of time in the next few weeks teaching the D-Line how to recognize screens(inside and outside screens) because we know that the OC’s are going to be doing something to slow down the rush. That D-Line gets into the backfield quickly. The other teams O-Line isn’t even slowing them down.
