Lincoln Riley Thinks He Might Retire In 10 Years

USC coach Lincoln Riley, who is 40, said in an interview with Graham Bensigner that he will thinks he might retire by the time he turns 50.

Graham Bensigner: I have heard that you will retire young.

Lincoln Riley: … Yeah, I’m on the clock. I don’t know how I’ll feel in a few years, when I became a head coach so young – I became a head coach at 33 – my mindset was always like, ‘If I can make it to 50.’ Because there [are] other things I want to do. I don’t even know exactly what they are. I don’t know that I have the list right now. But I just know there’s other things I want to do and experience. And I may have a different tune when I get to 49, but I don’t care a lot about legacy. I don’t care, in terms of like how many games you won, or records. I’ve never cared about that. Whenever I’m on my deathbed, I don’t think I’m gonna give a damn about how many games I won, or if I have a statue.

Caitlin Riley: My gut is that he, that we will retire early. For sure… Just because to him I don’t think there’s a tangible goal of, ‘I need to win this many championships or accomplish this much to be successful, and I can’t retire until that point.’ Our time is valuable to him, and so he wants to travel and do things with the girls when they’re growing up for things that he feels like he’s maybe lost out on now. And he is interested in other things.

  1. Problem with a high-profile football coach is the job is time-demanding and leaves room to do little else.
Better to have balance between work and play like the rest of us who are not being paid $9 to $10-million per year

    1. Yes when does he have time to spend with his wife and 2 girls? He might suffer the Tom Brady Syndrome and by the time he retires the kids and wife are used to you being gone. Or burn out like Dick Vermeil did.

  2. Maybe he’s not the man USC football was looking for. Pretty arrogant to not be concerned about winning national championships when he hasn’t even won one yet.

    1. I am sure he would like to win a championship or 2, but he won’t see himself as some kind of failure if he doesn’t get any.

  3. Man, let Riley be Riley. He obviously loves what he is doing right now and we should be thankful for what he has done so far. If we get a NC or two, great, but he has created something special and we all know dynasties do not last forever, even if your name is Saban. I really don’t blame him, he seems like a regular type of guy who is really good at what he does, but also sees what he is missing in life that is also important to him. Coach of Dallas Cowboys? Sheeeeeeit no.

  4. I don’t believe LR is retiring in 10 years if he is going to leave USC at the end of his contact it will be for a NFL job paying more than USC. Hopefully he will get a contract extension making him the highest paid college coach?

  5. Sounds like his wife is over it and is pushing Lincoln to find an exit plan early. She was a big reason they wanted out of small town Oklahoma too.
