A USC sideline observer told me that during Saturday’s USC-Arizona State game, there was a situation where Lincoln Riley was yelling at Caleb Williams to move the tailback before a play and Williams yelled back, “No! No!”
The tailback stayed in the original spot and the play was run. Now this might be an incident if it involved another quarterback. But Williams is the Heisman Trophy winner and future No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft. So he justifiably has more influence. And he backs it up on the field.
He’s also a a junior now and no doubt feels more entitled to make decisions.
I suspect Riley and Williams clash during games as both think they know best for the offense. If only we could decide who really does know best?

This isn’t a team –for better or worse it’s the Caleb Show. Lloyd and Branch and Rice are hugely talented —but it’s still the Caleb Show. Riley drew it up that way. Now he has to live with the prize….which is a group of players led by a smart & gifted QB …. who has shown a tendency [which is understandable cuz he’s young] to pout a bit when things aren’t living up to his dream of perfection.
We probably can’t go all the way with this team… but it’s going to be exciting to watch. In a single, “winner takes all” game —I’d bet on USC against almost anybody —-but in a long, tough season requiring discipline and weekly progress as a team —-I think we’re in for a few problems.
And now… this public announcement. Even though he asks for…. begs for, actually…. the treatment he gets here, I don’t like seeing one person getting so beaten up by the group everyday. If you look at any Comments Section these days it looks like “Lord of the Flies.” I don’t feel good about myself being part of it. I don’t think any of us do [we just see it as a way of patrolling the borders of our rough & tumble blog] —-but I think our “cure” targets a person with [what I’m beginning to think are] serious emotional problems. I don’t like the look of that.
My suggestion is we try limiting our comments to what WE think about ANY given topic — rather than responding to him. No matter how ugly or inflammatory the provocation, let it go. Please consider this. We, all of us, can save this blog. It’s worth saving.

btw, i watched the highlights of the game and noticed on that return where Branch reversed field, he was one block away from potentially another 6 points. Lake Mcree is ahead of him with one guy to block straight in front of him and he just runs past the guy without touching him.
the tight ends are another area that I dont think is getting very good coaching. riley can use tight ends creatively, but they dont get alot of use because they just dont perform on the field. i dont think lake is a good enough blocker.

Scott Wolf, I would like to point out your lack of professionalism and integrity as a sports journalist. My background is in the IT field and am familiar with WordPress architecture. After ghosting your blog several times something odd came to my attention. A person who often replies under the username “Cowardly Gabby” (too many characters to list the entire name) is replying with “embedded posts” lifted from Twitter accounts. Here’s the problem with that, only the administrator/ owner of this website would have access to “developer t00ls” that could permit these types of posts to come through without being flagged for moderation.
The person in question is replying with “embedded posts” one after another, often only one to two minutes apart. If I try to post a reply with an “embedded post”, from Twitter, in the comment box it would trigger the “waiting for moderation” dialog. It’s obvious this person’s relies are not being flagged for moderation.
You have just been exposed for engaging in some really despicable behavior. I will be sure to let the other sites I frequent know the type of behavior taking place here

It’s getting really comical how many usernames Scott or Gabby is using. Why I don’t know? I’m over it now just make sure you come correct and have something to say that has some substance. Caleb and Riley getting into a debate about the called play, is just a difference of opinion. At the end of the day Caleb won’t win a Heisman because of the defense. Hopefully LR will run more because we are going to need that when we play ND, Washington Utah. These games we can control time of possession in order to rest our defense and keep Pendix on the sidelines. Passing 70% n running 30% is not a game plan for those games.

Caleb has likely been given more authority over play calling this year. He frequently audibles out of plays. It is not surprising that when he does this a conflict arises with Reilly who thinks he should have stayed with the play or made a different audible. No big deal here. But I don’t particularly like all of the audibles. It seems to negatively affect the rhythm of the offense. SC had to burn a few time outs because they could not get the play off on time. I wish that they would do more hurry up play sets and perhaps go to scripted plays in the first quarter of the game.

Analytics can be very misleading if you dive into USC defense it’s has improved a lot, but the eye test with suggest only a fraction. Analyzing the metrics compared to last year the numbers suggest a major improvement Right? They are 128 in penalties 9.25 per game, if you take away the TFL n sacks, penalties it would show a marginal improvement. This is something to build on LR. If we can reduce the penalties and RedZone effiency we will be able to reach the CFP.

They are giving up 2.8 yards per play to the second worst offense in the PAC 12. Why? Because Grinch refuses to capitulate on his one gap approach. This team is not all heading in the same direction. In all three phases, players are making selfish choices and are unwilling to sacrifice for the teams sake. Coaches are relying on unreliable players too many times. I suspect, both senior corners will start against the Irish and Utah. Enough of the constant stupidity from the young guys. I know we need them next year but good golly Miss Molly, stop putting them in isolations. Riley should go big and run over these suspect teams.
It’s getting to the point that I’m emotionally spent and starting to feel indifferent towards the years team. I have them as the eight best team in the land and behind Washington.
Oregon is a mirage. Utah is weird. He can’t play, Kyle. His knee is shot.

Agree. Washington is a better all around team than we are. But we do get them at home [unfortunately they have Stanford the week prior…so they essentially have a bye—while we will be having a tough away game at Cal]. I only worry about Oregon cuz we have to play them in their own psycho stadium [and we’ll be emotionally in a weird place with Washington just behind us and UCLA just in front of us]…..

Examining the top 20 defenses look at teams and style of play. (3) Big (5) ACC, (4) SEC, 3 (PAC), ND AForce, Tulane , Ohio, Iowa St . Michigan Ohio, Penn St are running teams, all are in Top 10 Time of Possession, your not going to have enough possessions to average 350 tyds. ACC QB play is below average only Maye n Jordan are above average In the PAC OU UCLA played cupcakes early. Utah is the only legitimate defense. SEC is legit no evidence to prove their not. ND has played subpar QB’S. So with that said we are not that far from being where we need to be Penn St is the top with 211 yds n we are 364. So we just need to get around 300-325 and that would put SC in the top .40.

Your focus on assistant coaches is misguided. You can have the best assistants in the world, but if you’re not capable of taking their input and getting better results then the problem starts with leadership. You allow it then you get what you deserve.

There is hope if LR properly tells Grinchy that he must play the players that gives them the best chance to win, regardless if he is a transfer or been in the program for 4 years. Hopefully they will start Gentry for Cobb , Davis, for Curtis, Covington, Wallace, we need to play our best players. The real seasons starts now.

MG, that’s wishful thinking you would think they would have already made the changes. Competition is supposed to breed maximum effort discipline like the WR, RE positions. I hope we change our mindset going forward. Do you think any of these coaches read these comments? I know the Dodgers, Lakers and other organizations do pay attention to what their fans are saying! Any successful business always wants know are they providing the best service to their customers.
