A Real Question Of Competence

Cornerback Christian Roland-Wallace played every snap against Colorado and was on the field for 94 plays.

So let’s review: I said when he transferred he would be the best cornerback on the team.

The coaches tried to make a nickel back out of him. The coaches did not start him until the fifth game.

Do I know more than the coaches? No.

But what the hell are they thinking? They took a no-brainer situation and made it complicated. They wanted Ceyair Wright and Domani Jackson to start. How has that worked out?

It just shows that despite being 5-0, there are some real questions of competence on the staff and I’m referring from the top on down.

  1. The incompetence of Grinch is not surprising. When you have an incompetent leader of defense you get an incompetent result. Just like any organization, the head of the organization, Lincoln Riley, is responsible for Grinch and all the other assistant coaches and the results they produce. Is the football team only judged on their offensive results or the results the whole team produces? It appears that USC’s football team is coming up short and the head of the organization, Lincoln Riley must be held accountable for that. Where is the accountability and the consequences?

      Bryson Shaw thought his mind was set. He was happy with his commitment to Wisconsin and wasn’t going to entertain the overtures from Ohio State and its new co-defensive coordinator Alex Grinch.

      He was adamant that his recruitment was done.

      “[Grinch] tries to set up an appointment with Bryson, and Bryson blew him off like the first three times,” Bryn Shaw, the father of the USC safety, recalls over the phone. “Coach Grinch actually liked that because once he got that Ohio State title and worked for Ohio State he figured all the kids would just roll over — when you call them up and say ‘Hey, this is Coach Grinch at Ohio State,’ he figured that would get him into whatever door he wanted to get into — and Bryson ended up being kind of a tough cookie for him.

      “Bryson told me, ‘I’m not going to Ohio State, I’m not going to Ohio State no matter what, I’m not going to Ohio State.’ Then they [did] one of those, ‘Just come visit. Just come visit us to talk to us.’ … So we went out there.”

      Four years and three college football seasons later, after starting 12 games at Ohio State last fall and finishing third on the Buckeyes with 59 tackles, an interception and 3 pass breakups, Shaw was ready for a change.

      And although he never actually got to play for Grinch with the Buckeyes, as Grinch was hired to join Lincoln Riley’s staff at Oklahoma before that could happen, there was something about that connection that had stuck with him.

      When Shaw entered the transfer portal in April, he already kind of knew where he wanted to go.

      “I knew I wanted to be with Coach Grinch if he came calling again,” Shaw said, reflecting back on that process. “That’s a guy I was very familiar with, always wanted to play with. I understood why he left Ohio State, great job opportunity to go to Oklahoma. So as soon as he came calling, I’m like, ‘Yep, that’s where I’m going.'”

      Shaw had flown under the radar for USC fans much of the past few months. He hadn’t had a chance to create any buzz in fall camp as he tore his quad muscle during one of the first practices, tried to come back too soon and set himself back further as the season progressed without him for most of the first month.

  2. Donte Williams can’t coach and seems to play favorites. No way should Domani Jackson play and Ceyair Wright is weak also. Play CRW at one corner and Jacobe Covington at the other. If Covington struggles, move Callen Bullock to cornerback. He played there part of his freshman year and did well. Try Zion Branch at safety with Max Williams.

        5. Weaken the military.

        6. Weaken law enforcement. Don’t enforce the laws, no cash bail.

        7. Do nothing to deter Russia from invading Ukraine and then send hundreds of billions of dollars to a country that can’t possibly win the war.

        8. Weaponized the DOJ and FBI and arrest your political enemies. IRS can be used for the same purpose.

        9. Government control of free speech, the right to assemble and protest, what can be said on social media platforms, and media compliance.

  3. I suspect that the coaching staff were hoping that Domani and Wright, who are significantly faster than CRW, were going to be better fits at CB. But they haven’t improved enough, so they are now using CRW at CB rather than at NB. It is not an ideal situation, but it is what it is. Outside of Bullock, I doubt there is one starter among the secondary and LBs who would also be a starter at GA, OSU, Mich, etc.

  4. Why they started who they did is a good question. I can see letting DJ and Ceyair play a lot of downs just to get them PT. Practice is one thing, game time is way different. It doesn’t matter who is in there, Grinch will have them moving out of position or else they will be lost not remembering where to go. It ain’t the players, its the system.

    1. It is both the players and the coach steveg49. There are times when the players are clearly out of position – like the last plays of the first and second half, both CO touchdowns. But Domani has no idea what he is doing. He does not turn his head to make a play on the ball as if he has never played pass coverage before. And he missed two key tackles on 5 yard hitch routes that resulted in huge gains. Can’t put that on the scheme. Everyone seemed enamored with Domani’s measurables – height, wing span, and world class speed. Was he ever a football player? Doesn’t look like it. Didn’t play his senior year at Mater Dei.

Shaw is as bad as Domani and I have yet to see any DB turn to the ball, unless they are coming forward after the ball is in the air like Bullock does. We have the talent to play hardnosed defense, but Grinch wants to finesse on each play. Just simplify and see what happens. Nothing will help the DBs as long as they are not coached to turn.

      2. Shaw has the speed of a turtle out there. Poor closing speed and bad pursuit angles. His toughness is his somewhat saving strength. Our corners are not at the level where they can play an island…..We need to use some cover 3, the underneath stuff is hurting us also…. Worst LB group in the conference, Tackett is out there spinning his wheels put nothing to show for it. With time his instincts will improve, but we need it NOW!……Lee and Davis are getting the shaft.

      4. I watched some of the Texas vs. Alabama game and Notre Dame vs. Ohio State. Both Texas and Notre Dame had some really good cover cornerbacks that turned to make a play on the ball. The Notre Dame cb was on an island against Harrison on several plays and took him out.

        Haven’t seen all their games but Texas looked really good. Better athletes than USC or Alabama except for Caleb and Zachariah Branch.

Damages are an element of civil fraud. And the basis of the claim is that Trump overvalued his assets in statements regarding collateral for the loan. The judge, without considering any expert appraisal testimony concluded on summary judgement that Mara Lago was worth no more than 18 million because that was the tax assessment value. Market value and tax assessment value are two separate animals. Mara Lago is worth over 500 million. This is ridiculous.

  10. I wished someone would ask Coach Sanders what his opinion is about both USC and Oregon having just played both teams.

    USC is the better team but Oregon appears to have better coaching at this point in my opinion.

    I’m not anticipating a College Football Playoff appearance this year for USC.

    I feel better and my life will now go back to normal.
