USC Sunday Buzz: The Words Of Lincoln Riley

Lincoln Riley likes to conveniently forget things he says in the past.

Why did fans think USC would be better this year? Because of comments made by Riley.

“We’re way more advanced in every sense of the word than we were at this time last year,” Riley said eight months ago.

Is USC’s play this season more advanced? No.

Here is what Riley said in August: “Ceyair Wright has probably been our most consistent performer at cornerback and one of our most improved players on the team.”

According to last night’s participation report, Wright did not play against Utah.

And 15 months ago, Riley told the L.A. Times the expectations were “to win the championship. … We didn’t come here to play for second.”

Last night, he said, “I don’t know where the narrative starts” for USC to win a national title.

  • USC is No. 24 in the AP Top 25 poll. USC was 18th last week. The Trojans have dropped in the poll for five straight weeks.

    The AD that hired him is gone.
    The conference he signed up to play in is gone.
    Caleb is gone soon.
    He thought he’d get a big recruiting advantage from USC’s NIL power and that really hasn’t played out.
    He is discovering socal is a hotbed of talent EXCEPT for lineman and he can’t recruit lineman away from flyover country.
    I mean he left Oklahoma when they decided to join the SEC.
    Does he get along with the new AD?

    Two things, 1)can’t believe any NFL team would have interest in Riley right now and why would and NFL team make a heavy investment in an HC who would appear to be running away as a failure at USC? 2)That’s why I believe Riley is here for at least another of couple of years because he’s no longer the darling, up-and-comer young genius. He now has to prove he can rebuild a program and if he has any pride, he’ll honor his giant contract and see this thru.

    1. If you reaf the LA Times article on him, the guy is going through his mid life crisis at 40, for some it’s 30, others 50 or 60. He lost a very good friend to cancer, guy was young, then his mentor Leach died, he doesn’t like the current climate in college football where there is now little to no time off because of the portal, constantly have to be recruiting which I don’t think he likes to do.

  10. Let’s face it, Riley was a bad hire. At this stage of his career I don’ believe he has what it takes to build a well rounded football team. He is too one sided and his comments
    after a loss make my point. He sounds like Clay Helton. “We are so close, a couple of mistakes away, our players work so hard”. Sounds like he wants to build on what he has. I’d like to hear: “we’re screwed in the trenches we need more beef up front,
    special teams suck, we’ve got to do something about that, plus we can’t tackle
    worth a shit, we’ve got to make some changes”.
    If I heard that I’d say keep the guy; other wise buy him out and move on.

  11. Two points here. First, in any relationship the principle element is trust. In the case of USC football is the fact that I don’t think that the players no longer trust their coaches to put them in the right position to win games, thus they are struggling to win games, or losing games, that they should be winning. Once this trust is broken, then the season is going to end in disaster.
    Second, there was a short Youtube clip that questioned some allegations that CLR made against OU fans after he decided to leave for USC. One being that his house was broken into and/or vandalized. Another allegation was that his daughter’s cell phone number was exposed. According to the clip, the Norman, Oklahoma police have no record of these events. I have no idea as to the validity of these claims mentioned on the youtube clip, but if CLR is fabricating or sensationalizing these allegations, then this is really concerning as far as CLR’s trustworthiness.

  12. Riley is 6-4 in his last 10 games. Even that boob Helton could do that, and he worked for half the salary.

    SC is stuck with Riley, the BOT are not going to pay the kind of buyout necessary to make a change. If Cohen tells Riley he has to get rid of Grinch, Williams etc al he might decide it’s time for him to move on as well.

    I see Riley has found Helton’s speeches for after game. What Riley says is nothing but gooblygook.

    Grinch has to go. Why is a freshman defensive end covering a safety/rb in pass coverage? There was no support on that part of the field. I think it was utah’s first td. Horrible call.

    Sc lacks fundementals in all phases.

    SC has lack of purpose. They do not know what they want to do on offense or defense. they just throw plays out there to see if they work.

    Lack of discipline. Too many penalities. Bear can be a good player but he lets his emotions get in the way. He made critical mistakes at the wrong time.

    No sacks on the utah qb. Blame the def cordinator on that.

    The hotdogging by the players needs to stop. After they make a great play, they just go hogwild on showboating. this is a form of individualism. They need to play for the school and each other and put their showmanship aside. you make a great play, just get back to your spot and get ready.

    Riley needs to change his philopsy. He is going to a conference that is physical. He is not ready for that. Right now, he needs to run the ball and not quit on the run. The oline needs to start opening holes.

    Riley has to change his idea that it is the Caleb Williams show. He needs to coach it as Williams is just a part of the offense.

    This team will be the same as long as Riley is here and if Folt is in charge. She is happy that SC is doing okay instead of wanting a top team. Chen will have her job cut out for her when she has to make decsions. Will she force Riley to fire Grinch or will she do it herself?

    This coaching regime is nothing but Helton all over again. Riley is hard headed and will not adapt to what is needed to be done. Kingsbury and the defensive analyist are worthless. They are to break down the tendancies and create a plan to counter what the other team wants to do.

    This team and coaching staff are in a world of hurt. They are lost.

    Cal will make it a close game and don’t be suprised if Cal wins.

One issue for me is a consistent inability to compete and win big games and fix poor play/schemes. PAC 12 championship, bowl game, top teams in Conference or out of conference games. Year and a half if the game is important USC won’t show up. Thats on the head coach. Pete won big games. Even if they dropped a game during the season they would smash in the bowl game. Philosophical approach.

Riley was supposed to be this offensive guru but apparently now the recently the teams have figured him out and the offense and Caleb are struggling. The defense has always been a joke and now getting worse. The new AD better intervene before this train completely comes off the tracks.

      It is already a train wreck. SC is in a quamire. If they fire Riley,(which they won’t), they will be in for $80 mil plus another $10-15 mil for the assitant coaches. If you don’t replace Riley, then you will see SC get eaten alive in the Big10 because of the physical style of football they play.

      If i were Cohen, which I am not, these are the things that I would address Riley with:

      Fire Grinch and Williams
      Ask him point blank how he will prepare for the Big10, the offense that he is running is not working.
      Get Kingsbury and the defensive anaylist and ask them point blank the same question.
      Ask Riley how the recruting of local high school kids is going, especially for linemen
      Ask him why there is no discipline on the team and how do you fix this.

      cohen has to start being an AD instead of being a soriroty sister.

      SC plays michigan next year at michigan. They will do the same thing that nd did to sc this year in next year’s game unless riley gets it right.
