USC-Utah Instant Reaction

I’ve really had it with Lincoln Riley.

I know he can’t coach defense, cornerbacks, the offensive line or special teams. He can’t have a physical team. He’s terrible on 2-point plays.

But now I have to watch him berate game officials constantly. And after tonight’s loss, he didn’t make a single player available to the media. That’s a baby move.

This guy is so minor league but he is shrouded in a myth of excellence that has been crafted among the media. Well, maybe not so much anymore. You know he is 1-3 in bowl games?

USC is WORSE than last season. Think of all the times Riley has said USC is way better in Year 2. USC was on cusp of the College Football Playoff going into the Pac-12 title game last season. They aren’t even close to that right now.

I said I picked Utah to win because I was tired of watching nonsense. And that’s what I watched tonight. A Utah team with a backup QB amassed 482 yards. The QB had three TD passes. Caleb Williams had zero TD passes.

You know what else is nonsense? How much did Bear Alexander cost USC? His two 15-yard penalties were huge and allowed the Utes to kick a closer field goal at the end.

USC needs a strong athletic director to order Riley to make staff changes. Riley doesn’t like to be told what to do. So how it get resolved?

      1. After watching the presser, one thing I believe is true is expectations after last year, may have have been artificially high. I don’t believe anybody thought USC would win 11 games last year inheriting a mostly Helton squad and the culture that came along with it.
        WTBS, if Riley doesn’t make some major staff changes (Grinch & Donte) and find a way to sign OL & DL studs, we’re toast.

  7. I think Riley is gone after this season. I don’t think he was happy about the move to the Big Ten, plus he’d have to go out and find a quarterback for next season. The problem for USC is they are going to scramble to get a coach really fast. Urban Meyer is still available. Maybe that’s the move.

      2. I’d say give this guy a chance. Rome wasn’t built in a year. I say that even though I’m thinking this is going to be a tough year. I thought that the trojans played fairly well. Utah was definitely more physical. That has to be fixed.
        I’m confident that Whittingham teaches his QB to throw his arms up in the air and fling himself backward as if he just got hit by a freight train every time a D-Line just brushes up against him. They got 2 key roughing the passer calls in the game at Utah last year which cost us that game. They should dress the QB up in a Tutu and ballet shoes. You can’t touch him.

      4. Any coach that they hire(even if Vince Lombardi rose from the dead) will have trouble recruiting at SC because SC won’t pay big money for recruits right out of high school. I can understand SC’s position. That kid hasn’t proven himself. You could pay big bucks for a kid like Korey Foreman who turns out to be a bust.
        But if you don’t pay the money you won’t get the great players. The 5 stars will go with the money. You can have a 5 star who grew up a block from USC and USC was his dream team. But when it comes time to picking a college, he’s going to go with the money.
        I can’t blame him. If he waits thinking that he’ll get the money by his sophomore or junior year, he could have a major injury that ends his career before he gets the money. This isn’t badmitton. This is football.
        The NCAA has to do something about this or else the schools who pay big will win big.

      5. Why would USC refuse to pay the high school recruits and put themselves at a competitive disadvantage ? The Supreme Court says the players can get paid in Kindergarten now. Why would we wait for the NCAA to save us with some unconstitutional new rule when we have billionaire alumni ready to fork out the dough?

      7. N.I.L. is playing a role in all of this, but it is only a small one at best. When was the last time that U.S.C. put a premium recruiting offensive and defensive lineman? Sua Cravens said it best last night in the post game show when he stated that his freshman class was ranked as one of the best recruiting classes in the history of U.S.C. football, but there were only a few quality lineman in that class.
        Another factor in this is when was the last time U.S.C. had an offensive/defensive lineman drafted in the first round? The lack of player development at U.S.C. is below average at best, and that is the primary reason they cannot attract the top tier offensive/defensive lineman.

      8. Someone said USC doesn’t pay top dollar to HS recruits. Well players themselves talk about USC paying top dollar for recruits well before NIL (not that I have an issue with it). And the various NIL schemes set up at USC aren’t limited to transfers and are among if not the best in the country. Top HS players know ‘SC dominates the top CFB media market and has the premier brand when winning.

        Everyone is using the portal (and those who avoid it like Dabo at Clemson are paying the price for not). The best players in college including a certain Heisman winner last year came through the portal, and Riley had the benefit of using recruits from two premier programs and bringing them together, including the core of an offense that were already under his tutelage, so there’s that too.

        Kids are just around for 4 years, and they are playing their hearts out for their future, their teammates, coaches, etc. Every kid had a high school, a lot had a JC… We see FSU, UGA, tOSU, and all the top teams use the portal handily.

        Riley himself talked about how he had brought in the best talent (as if USC didn’t already pile on talent before him- and lest we forget in the last full year of Hugz he had a one loss team (the loss by a dropped pass), and a top 5 class. And even Clueless Hugz beat Utah and got a Rose Bowl win, etc. So it anything the culture is worse.

        Excuse makers are shameless- they’re wrong but come back with another excuse. Meh, like the poor they’ll always be with us. I just hope it’s not how they live their lives. Building bridges to nowhere and monuments to nothing.

      1. Not sure about Urban, but Folt needs to be fired. Academic rankings are dropping. She hasnt been able to pull in donations. She hires Mike Bohn, without any real vetting. The lady was ONLY hired to burnish Rich Caruso’s democratic bid (because Carol was a woke warrior at North Carolina).

        Until Folt is removed, the university will go from failure to failure. USC has the chance to rise about the petty agendas of the liberal academic world and forge a position as a leading institution focused on achievement of alumni, with many excellent schools, business, communications, engineering, computer science, cinema that are world class.       7. Give LR some time. Tom Landry, who won 2 NFL championships and was about 2 yards away from winning 4 NFL champions didn’t have a winning season until his 7th year. This is Jim Harbaughs 9th year at Michigan. Only in the last 2 years has he made the playoffs and he lost both games. His bowl record is 2-7. LR is a young coach and still learning. I’d give him a chance.

What is Scotty talking about, we lost a bowl game to Tulane so no, we were not on the cusp of being a playoff caliber team…. we barely skirted by on a weak schedule then we were exposed 3 times to far less talented but better coached teams. And that bowl record is worse- you missed a loss Scotty. And like others have pointed out, there isn’t anyone around to tell him who to hire or fire or what changes to make. An old football guy might but even then recall “Coach Bohn” who liked to involve himself but was an idiot.

    If one simply watches a football game for its entertainment value
    that Utah game was pretty entertaining, especially for the Utes

    Utah just seems better organized and they have a guy who strikes you as a real football coach, unlike the SC brand who continues to cement his reputation as a limited persnality crybaby type

  20. At the game last night and had great conversation with a couple of parents of football players (one on D and one on O). Conclusion is you should not work with your friends. Riles couldn’t make tough decision in off season to terminate Grinch, and now it is foregone conclusion that the Grinch will be removed on November 20th or whatever day coaches firing day is in college football.

    On a positive note, USC is lining up perfectly to play in SoFi for LA Bowl hosted by Gronk on December 16th!!

    FYI – Great halftime performance and great atmosphere.

  24. Upset Alert: So, the tough stretch everyone keeps mentioning is Notre Dame, Utah, Washington, Oregon and UCLA. The Oregon State team that beat (and beat up) Utah 21-7 gave up 40 @ Cal. Cal also had a Bye this week, so two weeks to prepare. Don’t be surprised Saturday if today’s comments pale in comparison to next weeks’.

    An awful defense – hiw many missed tackles or drive by swipes? That’s where thd game was lost – those deep runs for 12, 15 yds..Sloppy line decorum….no ‘attitude’ of ‘readiness’ when it mattered or if it was successful some undisciplined fool deflated the effort with a costly penalty extending a drive by the opponent.

    It’s a mess and pray tell just what does await we faithful a year hence? More of thd same or worse?

    Riley HAS TO make major changes (I’m fine if there done after the season) and stop pulling this Heltonesque crap of sunshine pumping.
    When it’s obvious to every fan, the media and anybody who follows college football, it’s not only embarrassing but comes off as smug and disingenuous.
    The losing wouldn’t hurt as much if Riley came out in a presser and acknowledged how bad it is and changes are imminent.

        I do see him as someone that has been hit with a reality 2 x 4 he’s never had to deal with before. Whatever he believed was his skillset that produced those great season and players in OK isn’t working here in the 2nd largest media mkt in the nation. This is not Norman-OK this is ‘LA’ save for NYC there is nothing bigger and unlike NYC LA has two major college football programs. Gun sights are set against this program as all top tier franchises / programs have arrayed against them continuously.

        He is smug but he now realizes he has no where to turn for a workaround but himself and he’d better understand it starts with a big slice of humility and a willingness to share command and the success that comes with it. In other words get rid of ‘friends’ and hire someone who you feel threatened by or be seen as one who couldn’t do the job (recruit, coach and play) of a top 5 college football program when you were given the opportunity.

    2. Riley needs to take accountability. Say that he thought he had built a stronger program, but that the coaches and staff are failing the kids and he will fix it. Because this is 100% a problem with coaching.

      Riley needs to be told by the new AD that he is an ineffective head coach and if he wants the job as OC of USC, then he can apply for that job. Otherwise, he needs to be a real head coach and delegate and hold people responsible.

      The only responsible thing to do at this point is to fire Alex Grinch immediately and try to have someone else improve things. That will also allow Riley to openly look for a new DC. Unless Riley is planning to leave LA because the job is too tough. Maybe he should just leave. He really doesnt seem to have the stomach for this job.

  32. Does Riley have the chops to change his mindset, be transformative to compete going forward? The top level coaches can and have. Of course there needs to be an assistant coach overhaul. But Riley’s 7 on 7 approach, including his recruiting focus, has been his only coaching exposure and experience. Even crusty Saban confronted himself and knew he needed a more dynamic offense. There’s needs to be more of a assistant head coach position. Someone who can come in and focus on the physical part. Recruit the physical part. Too bad Ogeron screwed up at the end of his LSU stint.

  34. The problem with LR is he wants to win but he only wants to win his way. That is trying to be smarter than everyone else with creative passing. He refuses to run the football and take whatever advantage he may have in a particular game. His passing game has been garbage. The offense is now on par with its bad defense. A complete philosophical debacle.

    There is an interception for a touchdown and then a Branch switching his way toward the go-ahead touchdown.
