USC Morning Buzz: Perfomance Must Outweight Preening

I asked a coach who faced Caleb Williams the past 2 seasons for differences in the quarterback this year.

“When he is in the pocket, he is as good as there is,” the coach said “Early in the season, he threw a couple balls that were dropped by the defense while he was running around. It was no harm, no foul.

“But against Notre Dame, they caught them. He has a lot of confidence but it can also be a thing that can get you in trouble. When he’s running around, he will make errant throws. He tries to make a big play too often.”

The coach said this is also a key to USC’s offensive problems.

“If you are scouting them, they have good running backs but they don’t commit to the run.”

I would add another difference: Williams seems a bit jaded to me. Like he’s over college football.

I wondered if doing things like going to the Monaco Grand Prix and getting VIP treatment while filming endless commercials in the offseason would have an impact on Williams? Now I think it has. Last year, he performed. This year, he spends too much time preening instead of performing and talking about how everyone wants to be in his size 12-and-half shoes.

Frankly, if Lincoln Riley hadn’t managed to make himself into such a ridiculous figure this season, Williams would be getting a lot more criticism.

  • I like USC assistant head coach Dennis Simmons because he seems to be an adult in the room. Here was his answer on USC not letting players speak to the media after the Utah game.

“I wasn’t a part of that decision so I’m not going to answer that question,” he said.

He didn’t just blindly defend Lincoln Riley’s actions. I’m sure Simmons wouldn’t have advised it. It’s too bad Riley didn’t seek his advice on this decision beforehand.

When Riley can’t even get the radio team to defend him, you know you are in trouble.

  3. Caleb Williams performance has slipped because he has a horrible offensive line, the schedule is tougher, and opponents have figured out how to slow him down. Lincoln Riley had the media fooled by playing Rice, Fresno State, Nevada, SanJose State , and a horrible Stanford team twice since he arrived . He’s proven to be a weak high school recruiter, and pulls average talent from the transfer portal with the exception of a few offensive weapons.

  6. Papadakis on 2 Pros and a Cup of Joe this morning (KLAC 570 AM) was asked about Riley’s future. He said what many have said – doesn’t look good but did think his moving to the NFL is possible ‘if’ he finishes strong and he’s no longer interested in staying at USC as head coach.

    He said that the new AD Jen Cohen has a duty to make Riley understand Bohn is gone and he is no longer an untouchable individual. That she has an opportunity to assert her control over him by letting him know that in future the coach will have his players speak to the media especially after a tough loss. She also needs to push Riley’s future career decision based on his refusing to permit players to speak to the media following the loss to UT.

    Lastly he said Riley’s reliance on the transport portal is showing its’ downside – too many ‘mercenaries’ have no connection to the program let alone school and where then is the ‘team’ concept?

    Riley is having a reality check that he has never had to endure before and one can only hope he comes back to truly ‘Fight On’ or departs because anything in between is not what he, the program, the university and esp the alumni demand.

  10. Ok I’m on the LR one dimensional, he’s unbalanced, too young, weak recruiter bandwagon. If you look at his overall stats, him bringing Grinch here is all you need to know. But…. what really isn’t talked about much and is the biggest issue, is USCs leadership allowed this program to become unrecognizable. We were a laughingstock. Piece of crap Helton didn’t even recruit his last two years. Lynn Swan was our AD? Really? What other program would pull such a doofus move. Allowing Helton to get a large contract without results. Face it, USC football was bottomed out. Tradition can help a little with recruiting and game attendance, but it’s been a long time since we’ve been on the national radar, except for clown moves. Yes, the program was literally attacked by the corrupt NCAA, but even then, weak administrative leadership cowered and allowed close to the death penalty on our program. Don’t think we recovered fully. Is LR the answer. He was last year. Even added to the list of our fabled Heisman Trophy winners. Is he the answer going forward. Don’t think he has the right chops for this project. And it’s a project.

    USC needs to start planning for next year. The strange thing is that I never hear Riley on the recruiting trail. You can only do so much in the portal as most coveted players stay with their program.

  14. Watched the Rams game last Sunday. The analyst repeatedly praised Stafford’s ability to deliver the ball to his receivers on short out routes in less than 2.2 seconds. He is in sync with his receivers and throws it to the correct area before the break. It is almost an indefensible play. I think one of the biggest problems with the USC offense is the inability of Caleb to deliver the ball quickly – 2.5 seconds or less. There is no rhythm to the offense. It seems like most passing plays Caleb is standing for 4 seconds or more trying to find an open receiver. He is probably making the wrong reads because it seems like some receivers are open but he trying to go for the bomb. If he can not make proper reads and deliver the ball quickly he is going to be a bust in the NFL. And it is not fair to blame the offensive line when a sack occurs after 3.5 seconds.

  16. I have to say that Riley missing practices after these 2 losses and the harsh treatment by the media is really a bad look. I really dont care if he is under the weather or maybe having severe anxiety or ??? If you arent in the hospital, you show up for the team.

    I remember Eric Gentry hopping back onto the field last year to support his team. That is what I want to see from the coaching staff. Otherwise, GTFO.
