USC Fires Alex Grinch

Alex Grinch has been fired as defensive coordinator, Lincoln Riley announced today.

Defensive line coach Shaun Nua and linebackers coach Shaun Nua have been named co-defensive coordinators. Defensive analyst Taylor Mays has been promoted to on-field coach and will work with the safeties.

REACTION: This is all a year too late. The season’s over. It doesn’t matter. Lincoln Riley blew it.

Now let’s see who Riley hires? It’s going to be critical he hires an experienced coordinator with a strong track record. Can he do it?

Had USC or Jenn Cohen been smart about it and fired Grinch after that disaster of a performance against lowly Cal, maybe Taylor Mays and Sua Cravens could have come up with a simple defensive game plan to give to those two simpletons Shaun Nua and Donte Williams and Washington wouldn’t have known what to expect.

      4. I do wonder if some USC alum players with experience at the top level could help to develop a quick defensive plan? That is a really good idea. I cant see how Odom and Nua are going to make a positive difference. This was more about getting Grinch out the door for the PR impact.

      5. I think that there are better choices than Patterson. His age bothers me. I’d go with a younger guy as my first choice. Maybe Patterson my 2nd choice. We had Monte Kiffin, who was considered the best in the NFL(a mentor of Pete Carroll) but he was older. We saw how that worked out.

    2. 100% correct – who…or what…ever hired Kiffin, Sark, Helton, and then OU-SC…until that is fixed, nothing will change. Those on this board who keep ra-ra’ing are fools. USC got lucky with Pete because no one else would take the job and he needed it due to Parcells having tainted opinion about him around the league. McKay was also a lucky hire. You have to go back to Howard Jones to find USC doing what other top programs due routinely (hiring a program-worthy head football coach with sufficient assets and authority to succeed).

    Did you know that SC still has a chance to play in the Pac-12 championship game but of course it requires beating Oregon and sucla
    so the Wash loss was immaterial because SC still would have still had to beat the Webfoots even with a Wash win

    This of course depends on what Utah (at Wash and Arizona)
    and Oregon St (Wash and Ore) do but if Troy wins out they’re probably in a re-match with Wash and wouldn’t that be something

    Now about those pesky little Webfoots, they can be beaten at home because I witnessed Leinart and Bush do it in 2005

The fact is Cohen’s lack of transparency throughout the tenure is concerning. The lack of forthrightness on such a critical matter indicates the ship will sail where the fair winds blow.         Not a good look couple that with the painted fingernails and all the incredible money he’s garnered since he transferred to USC. DLB loathe QBs – he’ll have a huge target in his back especially if he decides to enter the draft. As legion of players have said he’s not going to find anything resembling the ‘college experience’ in the NFL.

You have to hand it to Grinch though, he learned one defensive gane plan, one concept from WAZZU, try and get to the QB on every play, even on obvious rushing plays, forget the RB, don’t worry about him, get to the QB and try to accomplish it with defensive linemen that that are outweighed 60-70 lbs.by their counterparts across the line.

    He sold that shit for a number of years, amazing isn’t it, the bullshit people will believe. LOL!

  16. Grinch fired is a good and overdue move. Strength & Conditioning next would also be good. But the main problem with the D is that all they saw in practice is the “air-raid” – and when real balanced run/pass offenses show up, they can’t stop them. Moreover, and what is really troubling, is LR’s total abandonment of the running game, especially late when it can be most effective. If we give the ball to our running backs 30+ times in a game, we likely score 1 additional TD and/or remove a TD from the other team due to time-of-possession and a rested D. Our opponents have been watching our game film, and they know we have a weak O-line and that they can put pressure on CW, and it boggles the mind why LR cannot see the answer in establishing and maintaining the running game all 4 quarters. Tragedy. Pure and simple…

  18. Why the call for Orgeron. There is a reason he was fired at LSU, the program collapsed. And when he won the national championship it was because of Joe Burrows and the offense. The LSU defense was a disaster. LSU outscored their opponents. When Burrows left, it was over at LSU. Admittedly, Coach O can recruit but that is not enough.

    Who fired Grinch? Was it Folt the Dolt, Sorority girl aka the AD, or Riley? What time was he fired? Was it after the game or Sunday morning? It makes a difference who fired him. If it was Folt the Dolt, then she/he/it had pressure from the alumni. If it was Sorority girl, then I am suprised. If it was Riley, then he grew a pair. If that is the case, then will he fire Donte Williams afterwards and the oline coach? Will Riley keep Taylor Mays as a permanent safety coach? There is a lot going into this firing. We need to know Scooter.
