Lincoln Riley Explains Alex Grinch Firing

Lincoln Riley tried to explain the firing of Alex Grinch today but still sounded delusional at times.

“I have complete belief and conviction, we will play great defense here. It is going to happen. There’s not a reason in the world why it can’t. We’ll continue to take the steps we have to do to do it and we’re going to be very aggressive that way.”

This sounds almost the same as his comments in January.

Riley said he fired Grinch because a conference championship is at stake. But if that was important, why didn’t he fire Grinch 2-3 weeks ago?

“If we were in a situation where we didn’t have a whole lot left to play for in terms of a conference championship, having an opportunity there — might feel a little bit different,” Riley said.

Why did he fire Grinch? “Simply weren’t making the progress, I think, that we all expected to make.”

He also added this, which I doubt Oklahoma fans would endorse.

“I watched a defense when we took over at OU that was not the strength of the program and then I watched in a matter of several months it became the strength of the program.”

    1. Riley fired Grinch because Jen Cohen told him to, either he was going to do it or she was. If Riley had his way Grinch would have finished out the season.

      Lincoln Riley is a wuss, he needs to go as well. There is no team chemistry, no identity, no accountability, his teams just go through the motion, you saw it at Oklahoma and that’s what he brought to USC.

      Riley’s only concern is the offense, he doesn’t care about anything else.

      I can’t see a high profile defensive coordinator wanting to join Riley’s staff, he’s too bland, too vanilla, too boring, doesn’t interact well with people.

      Riley recruits nothing but skill players, no emphasis on defensive players, that’s not going to go over well when looking for a new defensive coordinator.

      USC would be wise to cut ties with Riley and find a head coach that actually fits the mold of USC Trojan football because Lincoln Riley ain’t him.

  4. Watching the Udub game on Saturday, I was thinking the 3 Stooges could have coached a better defense. It was surreal just how bad it was.

    The Udub RB who looked like Reggie Bush against the USC defense said afterwards he was “shocked”, as he had never had 100 yards before that game.

  5. It doesn’t matter who the defensive coordinator is. Unless CLR changes his philosophy to physical practices, emphasize the running game as much as the passing game, and the hiring of a special teams coach, nothing will change at USC.

  9. The problem with the current football ideology at USC is a finesse type football. They have moved away from the run first offense. Air Raid type offenses have no place at SC. I think moving away from run first was a horrible decision and just going along with what is currently popular.

      Riley will never go back to the physcial and historical aspect of SC football and that is the power run. With is raid raid offense it has passified the defense. If sc were to go back to the run, the the defense in practice would have to get physical or they would be run off the field. This translates into getting meaner and bigger dline and oline. Why change things when they work. Those Heisman’s show that the run game works.

    3. USC has scored more points this season than any other team. We would have scored a lot more if the defense was consistently making stops and breaking up passes. We just don’t have the defense that is capable of stuffing the other teams. It drives me nuts because I’ve played a bunch of outside linebacker and cornerback and it’s easy to see how we get burned. Maybe our defense will improve as we move on or maybe the defense will be rudderless. Certainly Oregon is a huge challenge and quite frankly, I’m bracing for the worst

    My question is, what type of defense will they run against the whoregone ducks? will they run the “Grinch Defense”, or simplify it down to a 4-3, 5-2, 3-4 front? If they run the Grinch defense then the two people need to be fired as well because the peking ducks will run 80 points on the Trojans.

  27. The L.A. Times writer was all over Wiley for not firing Grinch sooner.
    His troubles started with last year’s Tulane game but that loss was more on the unbelievable kickoff blunder than Grinch;
    and then at 6-0 it might have been difficult to fire him but it became easier at 7-3
