USC Sunday Buzz: The Heisman Ceremony Illustrates Familiar Flaw

With the Heisman Trophy ceremony last night, time to remind everyone this about Lincoln Riley: Who else has won three Heismans and never won a national championship? Or maybe even just multiple Heismans and no national title?

Worse, Riley hasn’t even made the national-title game despite his three Heisman winners.

When I initially brought this up in the summer, it was semi-controversial. Now people appreciate that it illustrates a fundamental flaw in the coach: His lack of appreciation for a good defense.

  • Five of the past seven Heisman Trophy winners were transfer quarterbacks. Mike Garrett was the only USC winner to attend last night’s ceremony in New York.
  • Bronny James will play for USC today against Long Beach State at 1 p.m. Unfortunately, the game will be on the Pac-12 Network if you want to watch it. LeBron James will be in attendance. CBS Sports reported someone was trying to sell tickets to the game on Vivid Seats for $56,393. Give me a break.
  • Former USC assistant coach Tee Martin is a candidate for the Troy job. Martin is currently the quarterbacks coach for the Baltimore Ravens.

  1. It’s been a kooky year. Caleb ROUTINELY changed Riley’s plays as the clock wound down [pleasing Caleb but confusing the receivers], legitimate questions from beat reporters were petulantly ignored [one reporter was barred and later reinstated], then Riley “got sick” and stopped going to practice. Owns correctly called it when he said Riley was getting overshadowed by Caleb….and it would hurt the team & “result in an 8-4 season” [we shoulda been so lucky]. I don’t think Riley is a bad guy…. but I think he needs to figure out what being a Head Coach in the Big City is all about.

      You’ll see if Riley is REALLY concerned with getting USC better on defense after the bowl game, if Dante and Tua and a few others are sill employed as well as no special teams coach but TWO WR coaches, then the only thing that will have changed is Lynn replacing Grinch, which Cohen probably made Riley do.

  3. At least Riley is now saying the right things about the defense. [I know, talk is cheap.] He said that the defense is now the number one priority in the program and that will be reflected in everything the team does including how the team practices. If that is true, the offense needs to change in order to sustain long drives and rest the defense. We need to see formations wherein the quarterback lines up under center, a fullback, an h back, two tight end sets, ect. The team needs to run the ball, and practice running the ball between the tackles and defending against a power running game. Real tackling and blocking drills need to occur at practices every week. The toughest guys should play. And how about bringing back “competition Tuesdays” and allowing the press and other observers watch some of the practices. USC needs to practice as if John McKay, Marv Goux, the McKeever twins, Ronnie Lott, and other Trojan greats were watching.
