Since I mentioned it was former USC QB Bill Nelsen’s birthday, here’s a photo featuring Nelsen (left), George Van Vliet and Marlin McKeever admiring the Victory Bell on November 22, 1960.
The Trojans had defeated UCLA, 17-6, three days earlier.
“It saved my job,” John McKay would later say of the victory. USC had a 3-5 record entering the game in McKay’s first season.

I recall McKay was on the edge of a cliff before the 1962 season began….he pulled off his 1st NC but it was in sharp contrast to both of the preceding years.
