USC Sunday Buzz: What’s Going To Happen With Andy Enfield?

Andy Enfield is under more heat than at any time in his USC career.

But I don’t expect him to be fired after the season. His contract goes through 2027-28, so a buyout (negotiated by Mike Bohn) is considered significant. He makes well more than $4 million a year.

When I say the buyout is significant, I mean because it is USC basketball. USC will spend whatever it takes on football. But it thinks twice about basketball.

The other thing in Enfield’s favor is that athletic director Jen Cohen has only been on the job a few months. Does she want to make a big decision like this so soon in her tenure as athletic director? She has hired a men’s basketball coach only once (Mike Hopkins) and that’s not viewed as a success.

The odds are she prefers to wait a year before making any big decisions.

This means Enfield probably returns but with a lot of pressure on him to return. And what’s the roster going to look like? I’ve heard rumblings about players looking to transfer out so there be a lot of change. It’s going to be a stressful atmosphere.

  1. Where is Owns to clue us in on all the craziness going on at UCLA? AD Jarmond has a hidden agenda and collects money to buy out Chip Kelly’s contract without telling the Chancellor? Remember the old days when Chancellor Young would be prominently on the sidelines at all the UCLA-SC football games? The current Chancellor Block is out of touch and the new AD who didn’t hire Chip obviously wants to bring his guy in to be coach and can’t wait until Block retires at the end of July. With all this dysfunction, no wonder UCLA’s sports program has gone down the drain just in time for the move to the Big Ten.

  2. I’d pull the trigger if a string candidate rolls up & reaches out. He’s in line for some more stellar recruits but what difference can they make when he runs the same tired scheme?

  3. Enfield such a complete disappointment this year but he’s won enough recently that he’s safe. And you dont want a first year coach navigating what will be a pain in the asa experience in the big 10. But if he struggles next year, all bets are off…
