Notre Dame’s Unique College Football Playoff Situation

The College Football Playoff moved to its 5+7 model today for 2024-25 thanks to the demise of the Pac-12.

The “5” who automatically qualify are P4 schools (like USC) and one G5 school.

There’s been some complaints that Notre Dame will be the No. 5 seed even if the Irish are ranked No. 1 and have to play four games. The top four seeds will usually get a bye.

But . . . the (Power 4) four conference champions will have played a conference championship game. Notre Dame doesn’t have to play in a conference championship game.

In essense, Notre Dame’s conference championship game will be the first-round game. The Irish agreed to this in 2021. But there were still some people complaining today.

  2. Save for their season opener against TX A&M and USC as their final game they play no one that will prepare them for any kind of ‘playoff’. Miami-OH, LOU, FL St., Navy, Army Stanford, No. IL, Purdue, GA Tech, VA – even their ‘away’ games are in settings with the usual ‘subway alumni’ in tow.
    They have had multiple shots since the CFP and FBS was formed, to win a NC. They are now on the road to 36 years of true failure (since 1988). They suck….’blank’ em’!

      1. Another one of my favorite movies….Rudy. That’s what SC needs, a movie comparable to Rudy only about SC. Why not? How many movie makers have graduated from SC. We’d probably have to make it with USC grads. If the NCAA made it, they wouldn’t call it Rudy, they would call it O.J.

        OJ was a very good teammate.
        He came in from San Francisco City College as a jC transfer, being a Junior in the Fall.
        I was a Freshman in the Spring of 1967. I was the Captain of our undefeated Freshman football team of 1966, trying to make the Varsity.
        There was one opening for a linebacker, with about 14 candidates.
        At that time, Spring Practice was brutal. 4 weeks of full contact with 4 taped scrimmages.
        I remember the first few days, everyone was pointing out OJ, and I never heard if him.
        He was only allowed to practice that first week of Spring. I had a great tackle on him for a loss on a swing pass. I was knew that tackle helped me beat out the other 13 linebackers for that coveted last spot.
        After that first week, Mckay told OJ to go run track. He had seen enough and didn’t want to risk any injury to his newly acquired Superstar.
        OJ then concentrated on the USC track team. He had world class speed. He, Earl McCulloch, Lennox Miller and a super fast white guy, proceeded to set the 4×100 yd world record. OJ had something like 9.2 or 9.3 speed and he didn’t even run the anchor leg! That was done by Lennox Miller, who was from Jamaica.
        Back then, OJ was a great teammate. He was somewhat quiet, not boastful, but comfortable and confident in his
        God given abilities. He was married, which was unusual at the time, and happy.
        Later, He had two children, and unfortunately, one died of drowning.
        He got divorced, moved to Hollywood and changed for the worst. The rest in history.

        In some game in which USC was pounding Notre Dame at the Coliseum, one young [& drunk] USC fan kept standing up and screaming “Rudy was just a movie!” —- several Notre Dame fans in our area started whispering to each other the last few times he did it —- I told my sister-in-law it might be a good idea not to walk out the same tunnel as that kid.

        Plow Horse, Pasadena, Steve, CR and Buddha are all great guys. But even they let loose on her once in a while. I need to do as good of a good job as they do at ignoring her. But sometimes it just feels so right to give it back. Don’t mind your advice one bit.
