Saturday Buzz: Football Used To Be Just Part Of Physical Options at USC

The USC baseball team has lost its first five games after losing to Portland, I repeat Portland, 4-0 last night.

But for me, the real question is what can players do about it? Can they take extra batting practice anywhere? At El Camino College? At Great Park in Irvine? Is there transportation available if a player wants to stay late and hit? Does El Camino take the field right after USC?

This is a facilities’ nightmare for USC baseball, no matter what anyone says.

  • I wanted to run this picture of the 1967 USC Rugby team, which went 13-1-2, because it features tight end Bob Klein, offensive tackle Mike Taylor, middle guard/defensive tackle Williard Scott and halfback Don McCall.

It’s crazy that football players were risking injury playing rugby. Craig Fertig played rugby in 1965 and he was a quarterback!

Klein (84) is jumping for the ball below in 1969. Now consider he was also a first-round draft pick in 1969 by the Rams. Can you imagine that happening today? Never.

  • USC linebacker Greg Slough was a Playboy All-American in 1970. John McKay said before the season Slough was the best linebacker in the nation.

But in the winter of 1970, he fractured both ankles playing rugby for the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club in San Diego. Slough played several years for the club.

“He has a great future in front of him as a professional and he could endanger it if he was hurt to the point he couldn’t play,” McKay said.

    I wondered why her attorney kept pressing the odd defense that it was another car that killed the kids not Grossman’s. The jury didn’t fall for that. A smarter approach would have worked on mitigating the damage, perhaps going for an involuntary manslaugher verdict with Grossman taking the stand and showing sincere remorse

      1. More than 90% of accused are guilty, as you know Michael, and so their defense attorneys look for any angle to get them off or to obtain a lesser charge, and it can get very dirty.
        This Grossman attorney, despite all evidence contrary to his lying theory, tried to get an innocent party guilty of the killing. It takes a certain cold character to do this and I am sure he sleeps well at night

  11. I still cannot get over how this Grossman case was so mishandled by her Texas supposed hotshot lawyer. Admit that you killed the kids, cry on the stand, show remorse, and maybe get an involuntary manslaughter verdict and not a second degree murder charge. With the former she might have gotten a year or so in jail and then out instead of a potential 34 years (which she at 60 is a life sentence)
