Morning Buzz: Viral Recruit Coming To USC

When defensive end Gus Cordova committed to USC on Sunday night, it was almost an afterthought, considering he was the fifth defensive player of the day to commit to the Trojans.

That might have been intentional because Cordova’s become the antagonist of perhaps the most viral high school football story of the past season. A good account can be found here by John Canzano.

What happened? Cordova asked a teammate at Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas, who was allergic to peanuts if exposure to a single peanut would really kill him? The teammate pulled out the EpiPen he carried as proof.

Cordova and a friend then put peanuts in the affected player’s locker. They also put some peanuts in the player’s cleats and filmed the act on an Iphone. The player developed a rash on his arm but played in that day’s game.

Cordova and his friend were suspended for two games and disciplined by coaches at Lake Travis.

The victim’s mother said Cordova’s continued to make comments at school harrassing her son. Cordova’s mother denies it.

Meanwhile, the story has gone national. And now Cordova has committed to USC. Maybe one reason Cordova committed to USC was to escape the story that would have dogged him if he remained in Texas. Already Sunday night on social media, there were plenty of comments about him and the peanut story.

“What my kid did was not right. He shouldn’t have done any of this. I don’t take this lightly,” Cordova’s mother told Canzano.

  1. Not the type of person you want on your team.

The moron could have killed the other kid with his stupid act.

How long before Folt pressures Riley to cut ties with the kid ?

      1. Isn’t this why they spend millions on a recruiting staff ? No one found this story about this kid before hand and made the coaches aware ? If they did and he was recruited anyway, what does that say about Riley and his staff ?

  2. The “kid” made a stupid mistake. There is no way he thought the other kid would die. Let he without sin cast the first stone. So, is this kid supposed to just stay in his room and not try to advance himself the rest of his life because he pulled a stupid prank? Give him a break and see how he conducts himself moving forward. He is not evil just a dumb teenager. Maybe he should be made to wear a big D on his shirt for the rest of his life.

    1. You have more excuses than Carter has liver pills, Kenny Boy. Gus Cordova has shown no remorse, get it? That is evil. Maybe he better make amends to the family and community he harmed with his sociopathic plot and take some time away from sports to think about the horrible devious thing he has done before he is rewarded with a full ride scholarship to a major university.

He’s almost old enough to go fight and die for his country. He was told that peanut allegies could kill and delierately tried to expose the teammate to kill him. But I’m to be forgiven because I’m just a teenager who isn’t smart enough to Google ” food allergies ” to see that food allergies can kill people or maybe I just wanted to see if he had to use his EpiPen, hahahaha. “

    4. I agree with Ken. Are we going to destroy a kids life and future career because he put a few peanuts in one of the other players locker when all over the country DA’s are letting robbers, rapers, child molesters and even murderers go free. I don’t have the time to do the research thoroughly but if I did I could find pages and pages of people who have done horrendous acts and walked free.

In the summer of 2020, they burnt down half of the country and there were people killed and injured and business people had their life long built business’s destroyed and most of those kids got a slap on the hand and nothing more. In fact, BLM and Antifa members filed law suits just for being arrested and so far they have been awarded $68 million by the courts. Crime really does pay.

Kids do stupid things. When I was that age I would have thought that a peanut allergy was have given me a rash on my finger and nothing more. Kate Steiner was shot dead on a pier in San Francisco for no reason whatsoever. As I understand it, the murderer was never convicted of anything. He spent 7 years in jail while the trial was going on. But that was 9 years ago and she is still dead. Twenty years from now, she’ll still be dead. And you’re going to ruin a kids life because he put some peanuts in another kids locker which caused a short lived rash while at the same time letting serious criminals go free? Get a life!!!!!!!

      1. Not getting a full ride to USC isn’t “ruining his life”. Heres’ a compromise: Make him a deal- go one year of JC and show you’ve learned your lesson doing charity work and and then offer him a scholie.

      2. This kid in my opinion has already paid a big price. You don’t think that all of these hackjob stories in the newspaper has not already ruined his reputation? Kids do stupid things. When I was a kid I did many things that could have turned out tragically(thankfully, they didn’t), especially when I was in junior high school. Was I trying to hurt anyone? No……I thought of it as just a joke. In this country we major on the minors and minor on the majors.

In this country we have fought 2 wars(Korea and Vietnam) where we were involved for 15-20 years. In all that time we lost about 108,000 soldiers. We lose that much every year just from Fentanyl overdoses because Uncle Joe doesn’t want to close the border. That’s not to include all of the murders, rapes, sex trafficking and everything else that is happening because Mayorkas keeps saying that the borders are under control and the democrats look the other way while the country is falling apart so they can get more people into the country who will vote democrat. And we’re going to throw roadblocks into the career of a young kid who has never had any arrest or criminal background?

I say he’s already paid a price and is still paying it and will continue to pay it until all of this blows over. I would let it go.

        Liked by 1 person

      3. He’s paid NO Price. He’s still on the team and gets a full ride to USC and he harasses the victim constantly. He is laughing at all the people making excuses for his sadistic criminal behavior. Nip it in the bud now, before we have another OJ on our hands.

This country is overrun by hardened criminals who are getting away with murder. This kid is not a criminal.

      2. There’s plenty of evidence Cordova tried to kill his teammate:

“During one of the IV treatments, the subject of Carter’s peanut allergy came up.

“It can kill me,” he told the room.

The other teenage boys asked questions. Some made jokes. At one point, Carter’s mother says, Gus pressed harder, asking whether exposure to a single peanut really would be fatal to the 6-foot-4 sophomore offensive lineman. Carter said it would and pulled out the EpiPen he carried as proof.

A rotten idea was hatched that day.

Two players, including Gus, decided to put peanuts in Carter’s locker. A terrible prank? Or a cruel act hatched in the underdeveloped brains of teenagers? Or something more sinister? Decide for yourself. The boys sprinkled a handful of peanuts in Carter’s cleats and placed a few more into the locker. Sources told me there were “15 or 20 peanuts” in total. One of the boys filmed the act on his iPhone.”

I’m going to use a 357 Magnum. I would not back off of this kid. I’d bring him to SC. If he doesn’t work out, you can always get rid of him after one year just as LR has gotten rid of a lot of guys in his first 2 years who didn’t fit into his program. If what you are saying is true then I’m not even arguing with you. We really should arrest this guy for attempted murder. If he was really trying to kill the kid, what does it matter if he used a gun or if he used peanuts. If the motive was to kill another human being, the real thing is motive. Maybe you might want to put this kid in a mental institution. That’s why even a small punishment like making him go to junior college can ruin his career because it will always be on his record that he tried to kill someone. But think about what you are saying…..Do you really believe this kid wanted to kill the other kid?

Anyone ever drive drunk as a teenager? How about with other teenagers in the car. It is a time in life where your prone to doing things without thinking about the consequences. Give the kid a second chance. And I doubt that he intended to seriously hurt his teammate. I thought that you actually had to eat peanuts to get an allergic reaction to them. Didn’t know that you could have an outbreak by simply having someone place them in your shoe.

      2. Since you’re either too dim or lazy to look it up, I did it for you.

Exposure to peanuts can occur in various ways:

        • Direct contact. The most common cause of peanut allergy is eating peanuts or peanut-containing foods. Sometimes direct skin contact with peanuts can trigger an allergic reaction.
        • Cross-contact. This is the unintended introduction of peanuts into a product. It’s generally the result of a food being exposed to peanuts during processing or handling.
        • Inhalation. An allergic reaction may occur if you inhale dust or aerosols containing peanuts, from a source such as peanut flour or peanut oil cooking spray.

Common symptoms of peanut allergy include skin reactions, such as urticaria, erythema, or edema. More severe symptoms include tingling of the mouth and throat, edema of the lips, and dyspnea. These symptoms will often frequently progress to anaphylaxis,  a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction. It can happen seconds or minutes after you’ve been exposed to something you’re allergic to. Peanuts or bee stings are examples. In anaphylaxis, the immune system releases a flood of chemicals that can cause the body to go into shock.

And YOU used the example of drunk driving, is that the same as this ?

        Liked by 1 person

      3. You again made my point Buddha – that it is not necessarily common knowledge that one may suffer from a severe allergic reaction to peanuts by simply having them in their locker or shoe. Many people would assume that you need to ingest them. Your reference states that the most common reaction is from eating peanuts but a reaction “may” result from skin contact. This reference hardly supports the idea that the kid was trying to kill his teammate. I was able to come to this conclusion despite the handicap of being “dim and lazy.”

      4. That’s the whole point. Kids that age don’t read up on food allergies and nut allergies. As far as firing a gun at somebody. In that case you have intent. Comparing what happened in this case with firing a gun at somebody is not comparing apple with oranges. It’s comparing apples with aircraft carriers. There is no comparison.

    2. Plow Horse — I hear ya! I usually puke over folks getting all upset over nothing….especially fans who overreact to pranks played by one teammate on another ……but… USC is recovering from a royal mess of a season [which featured players making the kinds of mistakes that follow programs which fail to emphasize discipline and work ethic]. At this specific point in his career Riley should be going overboard on putting together an unselfish, non-narcissistic, disciplined collectivity of players. And he should be communicating that message in his recruiting.

      1. This kid, on film, looks to me like a really good player. He should be at least a 4 star. If they talk to his coaches and come to the conclusion that he is a very selfish play and not a team player then maybe they should back off of him. If they decide to take a chance on him and it doesn’t work out, then they missed out on a recruit. It’s happened before. But don’t pass him up by making him look like a bad person. SC has done that too many times in the past. They have kicked people out of school for virtually no reason. I’m thinking of Boormeister, Bru McCoy, Bryce Dixon and others.

Calling this kid is a sociopath for putting peanuts in another kids locker is a stretch even when you use the term “potential”. If he was a sociopath it wouldn’t take until his junior year in high school to find out. I mean, I suppose he could be a sociopath and the world doesn’t find out until he is an adult. I guess I just don’t think that putting peanuts in another kids locker would be an act that would describe a sociopath. Maybe I just don’t understand the term.
