Morning Buzz: USC Needs To Go Portaling Again

So this is currently USC’s offensive line to start against LSU:

Left tackle: Elijah Paige

Left guard: Mason Murphy

Center: Jonah Monheim

Right guard: Emmanuel Pregnon

Right tackle: Tobias Raymond

Outside of Monheim, the interior is bang average. The tackles have less than 100 snaps of college experience. Again, the first opponent is L-S-U.

It’s still only spring, of course. So when offensive line coach Josh Henson says USC will look “pretty heavily” at the transfer portal, believe him.

  1. I enjoy the Coach Henson post practice interviews. Unlike other coaches, he generally provides real assessments of his players. He said that Raymond has put on 60 pounds and is very strong and athletic with a lot of potential. He is still getting used to the added weight and has lost some foot speed but Henson is confident that he will re-gain what was lost over time. Overall, he seemed very positive about the future of the offensive line. Much more upbeat than last year when he repeatedly stated that the transfers lacked fundamentals, were inconsistent and the line as a whole was having difficulty playing as a unit.

    1. Henson always sounds smart, mature and nice….. maybe a bit too nice. I’d like to see him acting a bit more like USC Assistant Basketball Coach Burns [screaming in that picture Scott posted yesterday]…..

    1. You have a point Sparrow. I recall Shaq kept putting on weight when he was with the Lakers and Kobe publicly criticized him. He was traded to the Miami Heat a year later, lost 25 pounds, was visibly quicker with better endurance, had his best year ever and the Heat won the championship. Phil Jackson later said “why couldn’t he have shown that kind of dedication when he played for us.” Shaq used to postpone optional surgeries until the season so he didn’t have to play a complete 82 game regular season. I didn’t respect him as a player because of his lack of work ethic.

      1. Matt Barkley played his best football the season he worked himself down to just under 200 pounds [and deflated the balls by 5% and rubbed his saliva all over them for a better grip —- old Sicilian trick]. Gaining weight and losing a quarter second of speed is not a winning formula at ANY position in football.

  2. Phil makes a good point. Sometimes these prima donnas need a change of team to feel as if they are starting over again and hence become more disciplined

      1. wrong wrong wrong!!!!!!. You need be much quicker out of a two point or three point stance run blocking. Your post-snap football IQ is absolutely pathetic. I question if you even played organized football at any level.

if I tried to explain it to you I am sure you wouldn’t comprehend…..knucklehead!
