Carol Folt Bullish On Basketball

I’ll be on KNX-FM (97.1) throughout the afternoon talking Andy Enfield and the USC-UConn game tonight around 20 minutes and 50 minutes past the hour.

  • Look at Carol Folt talking about Enfield and the hiring of a new basketball coach. If she is bullish on a men’s team that will probably have about 3-4 players on its roster for the new coach, she must be willing to invest a lot of money in the new coaching hire.
  • I know she is aware of the $10 million buyout for Brian Dutcher. What is Jamie Dixon’s buyout? It was $8 million in 2019. His current contract runs through 2027-28.

    My short list is Jaime Dixon, the coach from Marquette, and Jason Hart. I always thought that Hart was the brains when he was here. I will give Enfield credit at the beggining of his carrer at SC. They had glasses the coach whose team could only score 20 points per half. He was off a couple of bricks. When Enfield took over, SC was a dumpster fire that was a total destucted team. He got it going but could not get get past the plateau that he created.

Endfield was mediocre. He was not great coach. And certainly not elite. He was a classic Pat Haden reactionary hire when FGC reached the sweet 16 in 2013. Floyd before him was the better coach. Heck, Boyd was better. What always bothered me about Andy (aside from essentially zero future success in the NCAA tournament with USC) was that he still holds the free-throw shooting percentage record – but never got his teams to shoot a high-percentage from the charity stripe. In general, and although Endfield could pull talent in and recruit, his teams were always “incomplete” – never able to push their talent to the next level of performance on the court. My surmise is that his MO will follow him to SMU with similar (or worse) results. Time for USC to find a real next-level coach…
