USC Saturday Buzz: Mater Dei Recruit Chooses Alabama

Chuck McDonald, a four-star cornerback from Mater Dei High School, committed to Alabama today.

He picked the Crimson Tide over USC, Oregon and Georgia (sorry Donte Williams!).

McDonald’s commitment continues a trend of top Mater Dei recruits spurning USC. And it continued even though Nick Saban is no longer at Alabama.

“I want to be the best, and there was no better place to be,” McDonald told On3.

  1. Evidently did not speak with ‘ol Rollie about the great USC

LFR does not mesh too well with Mater Dei recruits

Kid wanted out of the hood.

  2. In either 2020 or 2021 Clay Helton spoke to the assembled Mater Dei football team at their gym. The players were jacked up about the fact he came to them rather than arranging to meet them over a recruiting weekend at USC. According to one blog account, Helton told them USC was “about championships — not just national championships…or Pac 12 championships…. but the California Championship too.”

Since that day very few Mater Dei players have chosen USC as a landing place.

      1. Well, its Gay Pride month. This is what Gabby’s family can be proud about.

      2. Family? Since she’s always accusing others of what she’s guilty, you can bet the remarks she makes about family. staying away are about her.

Along with her proclivity towards kiddie porn and being a limp dick.

  3. We have acquired one of the best defensive coaching staffs in the country. If there is a big improvement in the defense this year, expect some more defensive commitments and flips from other teams. A 10 win season would ignite our recruiting. We will be the #1 class. On the other hand, if the defense continues to be in the bottom tier and we lose six games or more, expect some de-commitments. Players want to play for coaches who can develop them for the NFL and for national title contenders. A sports car that goes 200 plus mph and a wad of cash doesn’t hurt either.

    1. Couldn’t agree more – we win they’ll come…..they’ll come. Riley knows his career is on the line if he fails this year. He is on the radar screen nationally as the ‘hot seat’…I don’t see this being a threat but a challenge ansd regardless of his past ‘this’ year is the year that will define him. He will rise to the challenge or very quickly fade….I see the former and I tire of those who claim the latter.

As to Helton meeting Mater Dei – well `yeah – what 30 miles from USC? Helton never should have been USC’s head coach – he was a nice clown

      1. “A nice clown.” Yep. If Helton donated a few million to the university he could have been a member of the board of trustees.
