USC Morning Buzz: A Surprising Line

Penn State is a 5-point favorite over USC according to Circa Sports. That’s a surprise given the game is at the Coliseum and James Franklin is 12-26 against Top 25 teams.

Maybe Circa doesn’t think USC is a Top 25 team.

  • Arizona coach Brent Brennan’s son, Scotty, recently attended the Arizona State football camp. He is a quarterback at Los Gatos High School near San Jose. Can you imagine the publicity if a USC coach’s son attended a UCLA camp?
  • Five-star quarterback Julian Lewis visited Auburn over the weekend. He is committed to USC.

it brings him great pleasure to think of USC outside the top 25.

    1. With someone other than Alex Grinch heading our defense USC probably would have beaten Utah, Washington and UCLA in 2023…and, as a result, we’d be Top Twenty Five in 2024. As it is, none of the top college preview magazines list us in their top twenty five —but I think they’re wrong. I bet we surprise LSU and go on to have a strong season.

      1. I hope your prediction is right. I am still not sold on Moss as the starting QB.

I see Maiave as a guy with more t00ls and experience. There’s a reason why Riley outdid Georgia for his services.

      2. Moss is a player respected by the offense — he’s well liked and tough as nails. But…. you’re right ….he’s not a big time QB. That said, I think he’ll start against LSU no matter what happens at Fall Camp.

      3. Mike I agree 1000% – Grinch is gone good riddance – although must have some sales skills. He’s the ‘safeties coach’ for Luke Fickell’s MN team.

Riley’s entire legacy hangs on this season as does Kelly’s at LSU. The winner of that game rolls on fast and furious and for the loser – a huge crater to crawl out from under.

PA St. has a weak opening of 5 games – 31/Aug @ WV then four straight home games against: 7th/Sep Bowling Green, 21st/Sep Kent St, 28th/Sep IL, 5th Oct Ucla – finally12th/Oct @ USC – save for @ WI and OH St. the rest of their schedule is not daunting.

There really aren’t many ‘national’ teams in fact I’d say there are just two
USC and Notre Dame…..I know AL’s had their incredible run of dominance and GA seems to be on the rise and the SEC is the strongest conference but for any real fan of college football it’s these two programs and how Franklin, failing to win the big games when it matters, doesn’t figure into the Nittany Lions 2024 assessment as to PA St.’s 2024 predictions is strange towards they’re being favord over USC by the sports 4th estate. It’s good to be loathed by the ‘hoi polloi’ but even better by the ‘patrician’ class.

  2. For the third election in a row, trump is lying that he was named “Man of the Year” in Michigan before he ran for president.

Trump said it again  on Saturday during a speech in Detroit: “You know, I got the ‘Man of the Year’ in Michigan. Years ago, long before politics, like 12, 13 years ago.”

Facts FirstTrump’s claim remains false. Nobody has ever been able to find evidence that he was named “Man of the Year” in Michigan before he ran for president. The state does not give out a “Man of the Year” award; Trump has never lived in Michigan; and has never specified who supposedly gave him this award and when.

In a close election, small shifts among independent and swing voters could determine the outcome”

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!……just the start……wait until the ads start flying depicting trump as a convicted felon…….LAUGHING MY ASS OFF

      4. Michael,

With all due respect, the dnc can stop trump. They can declare a state of emergency and stop trump from taking office and have the yellow helmeted Biden in office until hell freezes over. They can order a hit on him. the dnc is worse than nazism and communism.

  3. Stump: I am man of the year wherever I go, it’s just an unwritten honor bestowed on me

Penn St by 5 over SC a half year from now but subject to last-minute change

Don’t discount Auburn getting SC’s Julian Lewis, the place is one of the Southern meccas to be a college football star compared to Los Angeles’ “win and I may show up’

  4. The one sight from 2023 that will never be forgotten is ‘Celeb’ after losing to Washington crying vehemently in his mother’s arms. That game finished SC having any chance of getting into a major bowl, and Celeb gave up as evidenced by his lackluster effort the rest of the way

SC is not even a Top-25 team, my but the Trojans have fallen on ‘hard times’ once again as the ’24 team is a rebuilt and has much to prove against a ‘Top-10 difficulty of schedule

  5. Even if Moss and Maiave are close in practice Wiley certainly goes with Moss in the first game with LSU and will probably stick with him no matter how he is doing. Maiave will likely alternate with Moss in the second “gimme” game. The third game at Michigan could see an SC quarterback change

    1. Probably true. That’s probably just how Riley will play it. It’s probably the only way he can play it.

    2. What do you base your ‘chicken little’ act on? If Williams were still the QB I’d readily agree with you – he’s not and thankfully he’s gone along with his 15 year old mindset.

Riley made Williams – just as he did with Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray. The defense has been 100% revamped – this is the 3rd year and first full one of his recruits.

It’s not easy taking over a program as Kalen DeBoer (AL) Shereen Moore (MI) Jedd Fisch (WA) are about to find out.

      1. Let’s face it, P. T., Riley would just LOVE to get Maiava in there ASAP due to his Big Play potential…..but…. he’d better be careful not to mess with team chemistry if Moss is playing efficient football [by the time we played UCLA the whole offense was tired of Caleb’s Passion Play….they played Louisville tough in large part because Moss was in there at QB instead of Williams]……
