USC Notes: Tweet Heard Through College Football

Even coaches from schools who play USC contacted me this morning about defensive line coach Shaun Nua’s tweet about this week’s decommitments.

“It’s weak,” one coach said. “Why address it? It looks whiny. You don’t draw attention to yourself when you lose a couple recruits.”

  • About 25 Kings games will be on 710-AM next season. Does that create any conflicts with USC basketball?
  • The USC student who fatally stabbed a man allegedly breaking into cars on the Row will not faces charges, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón.
Ivan Gallegos, 19, was arrested after the confrontation with Xavier Cerf, 27, on Monday night in the 700 block of West 28th Street.
  • The Lakers have finally hired JJ Redick. That should improve ESPN’s broadcast team. Will it improve the Lakers?

  1. Scooter,

Until Jeanie Buss sells the team and a very strong management company runs the Lakers, the Lakers are toast.

The opposing coach is correct in saying it is weak in complaining. why let the world know. Why share a weakness so that the opposing team will know and they will exploit the situation.

gabbby is a perverted freak. Ban him for a year.

    1. And this weakness you speak out, how do you exploit it on the football field?…..I am all ears…

When you see your grandma err your mom, do you try to hump her and take after your dad who had you with your grandma? Nothing like keeping in the family. Is that why don’t allow incest because you are the walking example of what happens when you do?

    2. Well said ‘Paw-saw-duh-nah’ aka Arroyo Seco….not everyone is going to ‘join up’ – so what?

Lakers have a legacy of ‘kowtowing’ to their stars since 1981 – Earvin Johnson, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. West didn’t act that way nor Chamberlain nor even grumpy Jabar.

They also didn’t begin this while Cook was the owner – he sold the team to Buss in 1979.

West was a brilliant general manager.

  3. George must seen video tape showing self defense so Gallegos is a free man.

Not sure why his name was disclosed publicly as I thought USC protects student privacy.

    1. I think Scott Wolf made reference to this the other day. My impression of Pete Carroll is that that he moved beyond USC years ago to the NFL and though he’s 72, he still wants to coach in the NFL. Nice to see he’s still supportive of USC. Maybe he would accept a role within the program. Guarantee you that TTU student assistant Lincoln Riley was a fan of Carroll and USC 2002-2005.

      1. All that’s true but not now – not with his own (Riley’s) legacy about to be imprinted on himself. Time for PC is next Spring i.e. I doubt Pete Carroll would have happily anticipated Weeb Ewbank showing up at Florham Park back in 1994

      1. Speaking of attorneys who are class acts, I’m wait for the 51 so-called intelligence experts to be charged with election interference. If Trump’s 34 convictions were real and not politically motivated, it would be in the works.

      5. Michael: Seriously, how do you not prosecute someone when they stab to death a person who is purportedly looking into unoccupied cars maybe even breaking into them. You can’t use lethal force to prevent a theft.

      6. Plow Horse Plow Horse, Plow Horse. That is not what happened. In this day & age, criminals believe they are entitled to take other peoples’ (or corporations’) property. He got mad and confronted the 3 young men, threatening to shoot them. How many times have cops gotten off just because the perp reached for his waistband and the cops assumed he was going for a weapon?

If he had fled, or even attempted to flee, and they stopped him, then Gallegos stabbed him, I’d be right there with you, saying he had overstepped. But having encountered this mentality when stopping a crime, I can tell you it can get ugly very quickly. Even petty criminals feel entitled to stand their ground and if you encroach, they get violent.

It appeared to be a panel, not just Gascon, who came to the conclusion Gallegos was reasonably in fear for hie life. That is the only reason he wasn’t charged.

      7. Ok So Cal. The kid is using the “he reached for his waistband and I thought it was a gun excuse.” I didn’t know that when I posted earlier. But call me skeptical. He was with two friends who had sticks to defend themselves and he chooses to inflict multiple knife wounds on an unarmed man. Why does he even have a knife? The kid is extremely fortunate that he is not going to spend the next 15 years in jail.

    1. Exactly! If someone gets confrontational with you and threatens your life, you have every right to defend yourself!!

What’s funny is, if Cerf had actually had a gun and shot him, the way Johnny Wactor got shot, everyone would be saying “Don’t take a knife to a gunfight.”

  5. I hope this ‘Shame’ Nua read the feedback to his words about SC feeling sorry for itself because it lost a couple of ‘recruits’.

  6. This ‘Killing on SC’s Frat Row’ is as intriguing as a mystery novel. Facts are limited but are these- Trojan student (and don’t think that doesn’t have a ‘play’ in this) is walking the Row with 2 other students; there is some kind of threatening words that led to a physical scuffle; the deceased was stabbed multiple times

What were these 2 friends doing while all this is going on? Did Gallegos need to stab the guy multiple times in order to continue defending himself? Take a knife to a fistfight and you got the upperhand

  7. There is likely a ‘racial component’ to the Gallegos killing

Crudely speaking, if we place people into 3 categories– either you’re White, Brown or Black- ‘Brown and Black’ don’t always get along

Yes, he got what he asked for. Enough is enough!! We’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore!! 😛

  10. Another ‘the writing is on the wall’ with SC Coach Nua is that the Trojans are desperate for talent and can’t afford to lose quality ‘recruits,’ but it is ‘plain and simple’ a meat market out there-
