If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

Oregon received a commitment from its highest-rated recruit ever per the 247Sports composite rankings, when wide receiver Dakorien Moore of Duncanville, Texas, committed yesterday.

Let’s see if the Ducks can do something even more impressive: Get Moore to honor his commitment.

  • And now for some history:
USC’s Hawaiian players — Harold Han; Charlie Ane; Sol Naumu — at Bovard Field in 1951.
  • History often repeats itself. USC star offensive/defensive lineman Charley Ane decided to skip his final season of eligibility to turn pro in 1953, where he was drafted by the defending champion Detroit Lions. Ane had just been a key player on USC’s Rose Bowl championship team.

In those days, it was legal for the Lions to fly out to Los Angeles and meet with Ane before he decided to go pro.

“My wife and baby come first, so I signed with the Lions,” Ane said.

Ane reportedly signed a contract worth $7,000. Naturally, USC coach Jess Hill was disappointed, in his own understated way.
“We certainly will miss Charley because he is a fine player,” Hill said. “Undoubtedly, he had a chance to make All-American, which is certainly an honor for any boy.”

Ane won two NFL titles with the Lions and was twice named to the Pro Bowl.

  • When USC played UCLA in rugby in 1963, it was televised by Channel 11 with Bill Welsh doing play-by-play.

My favorite Welsh story is that when he did USC football games in the early 1960’s, he kept pronouncing QB Pete Beathard’s last name as “Beat-hard” and Beathard’s family finally had to complain to get him to pronounce it correctly.

  • A lot of people think USC women’s basketball came of age when Cheryl Miller decided to become a Trojan but it was really the arrival of the McGee twins two years earlier that transformed the program.

Here is Pam McGee (right) during her freshman season in 1981 facing UCLA. The other Trojan pictured is Juliette Robinson.

USC never won a national title in women’s basketball without Pam and Paula McGee. A little-remembered fact is Long Beach State All-American/Olympian Ed Ratleff was the assistant coach for the 1980-81 season.

  • Did you know when the Harbor Freeway was planned in 1948, it originally dissected Fraternity Row and threatened to prevent a planned expansion of the USC campus to Vermont Ave.

The route was changed following complaints at public hearings. USC and the Coliseum also complained about the Exposition Blvd. off ramp being insufficient for traffic and feared bottle-necks would create jams on the freeway, especially for football games.

USC and Coliseum officials proposed a two-lane tunnel running parallel with Exposition, and underneath Flower and Figueroa streets. It would empty USC and Coliseum traffic out into Exposition Blvd.

No one wanted to pay for the tunnel, however, and it never got built.

BANQUETS, BEAUTY QUEENS AND LUNCHEONS

  • Ayleen Ito, 18, is crowned as queen of 27th annual American Legion Fourth of July fireworks show at the Coliseum in 1959 by Yukio Hasumi, consul-general of Japan in Los Angeles.

Hasumi then attended the fireworks show with Vice President Richard Nixon and his 11-year-old daughter, Julie.

USC PICTURE OF THE DAY

  • Actor Charlton Heston gets his face wiped by Darlene Hard, the No. 1-ranked U.S. women’s tennis player at the time, durng the grand opening of the Lake Encino Racquet Club on Dec. 19, 1963.

They played an exhibition doubles match against Billie Jean Moffitt (pre-King) and Robert Stack.

Hard won the U.S. Open twice and French Open once. She lost a historic singles’ final match at Wimbledon in 1957 to Althea Gibson then immediately paired with Gibson to win the doubles’ title.

She excelled at doubles, where she won 18 major doubles’ titles, including seven titles at Wimbledon. She became a mentor to Billie Jean King, when King was a teen-ager.

“She was the best doubles player of her generation,” King said.

I’m running the photo because Hard worked at USC for 45 years in the student publications office and the vast majority of students who worked for the Daily Trojan student newspaper and El Rodeo yearbook had no idea of her illustrious athletic background.

PICTURE OF THE DAY

Actress Eva Marie Saint turned 100 yesterday.

  1. GEORGE — WHAT DO YOU THINK OF EVA MARIE SAINT? IN MY OPINION SHE WAS PRETTY SPECTACULAR IN “ON THE WATERFRONT” WITH BRANDO….
#SHE MIGHT BE A BIT OLD FOR YOU, THOUGH….

    2. I thought Eva Marie was impressive in North by Northwest too, MG. Hitchcock loved his blondes and generally chose very well. Trivia: Did you know that the 007 series was based on Cary Grant’s character in North by Northwest but Grant turned down the role. Not enough money. Sean Connery was cheaper than Grant and therefore got the part.

      1. Agreed. North by Northwest might be her best role, in fact. [She was perfect in The Player, too].

[Have you noticed how much Hitchcock loved placing women in the role of “compromised/bad girls with hearts of gold”? Notorious, Marnie, Vertigo, North by Northwest]?

      2. I think it is the picture Gabby. In other photos her teeth look fine. But even if she had a flaw it would not matter. Most beautiful women have a flaw if you look closely enough and the flaw typically adds to their beauty.

Thanks for hanging in there with all us bad boys till Fall Practice, Scott! It’s just around the corner. Once it starts we all promise to be good.

  8. Very pretty Japanese queen of the American Legion Fireworks show. Wonder what the story is behind the American Legion, Japanese consulate and Nixon. Some sort of good will gesture I suppose. Only American would treat their former enemies in such a way. The French still speak poorly of the Germans.

  14. -The Maggots here were out in force yesterday vindictively accusing me of stomping on of all things the ‘Declaration of Independence’ when the only stomping I was doing was on their boring repetitious Stump bandwagon cliches. It is just so easy to blast both the Maggots and Libtards

    Like

      1. And his statements are increasingly untrue MG. There were 27 posts on the 4th of July before Sparrow weighed in and none of them related to politics. “The I was stomping on the Trump bandwagon cliche” is a total falsehood. Most of the comments related to recruiting and saying happy 4th to the members. Then Sparrow says:

“Maggots and Libtards are so busy congratulating and patting their kind on the back for supposedly being right that nothing gets done.”

        Followed by:

“It is July 4 not ‘Political Ambush Day,’ a time to unite and recall how brave Americans won us the freedom to be different and to disagree.”

What cliche? What political ambush? And in Sparrow’s world if you ask him to take a position and support it with facts, you are infringing on “his freedom to disagree.” No, we are asking you to exercise a little conviction and take a stand on the issues of the day which are existential rather than attack those who do.

  16. Well, so far the Democratic machine has tried to bankrupt Trump. Over 500 million in civil judgments. All three lawsuits were meritless. Now they are trying to jail him to keep him from running. Four phony criminal cases. All of them are now falling apart. I would be pissed off at Biden if I were Trump. Crooked Joe has established a new precedent – If you can’t beat your opponent, have him arrested and bankrupt him and then claim he is a threat to democracy.
