USC Morning Buzz: Everyone Has Angle On Recruiting

Here’s four minutes on what’s wrong with USC that doesn’t even mention Lincoln Riley for three minutes and basically absolves him of responsibility.

It mentions donors not coming through at USC. You know whose job it is to get the mega-donors to donate? The coach!

You know how the Galen Center got built? Because Pete Carroll got Lou Galen excited about USC again and then Galen wanted to donate money.

Here’s how to boost NIL: Get Riley out of his bunker at the McKay Center and tell him to raise money.

  1. Starting the season 3-0 will solve this problem. Starting the season 1-2 and tarmacing Riley on the trip back from Ann Arbor also will solve this problem.

    1. Guys — Check out Yogi Roth’s “Y Option” [I got it in an email but it’s probably available on YouTube]. Yogi explains that “Everywhere I go people ask me what are you going to do next, Yogi? Well, here it is!”

    2. The 3-0 to start the season as a solution was confirmed by Riley Pettijohn. He liked USC a lot but ultimately chose Ohio State because the Ohio State program had a history of developing defensive players and USC was just starting out with their new coaches. He said USC’s payola/NIL was competitive and not the difference maker. Perhaps if USC’s defensive is greatly improved, and I think it will, we can flip a few guys.

      1. I agree….get past LSU, UT St and MI – winning shuts down all naysayers. Riley’s entire future is on the line no different than what was, until he arrived at USC, Pete Carroll’s. He’d been sacked as head coach of the NY Giants and same with the Patriots. He was deemed a poor choice by the 4th estate and alumnae. Former AD Mike Garrett’s reputation was on-the-line due to his firing John Robinson and Paul Hackett. – the stage is set for Riley to go ‘all out’ i.e. he has no ‘firewall’ to fall back on because Mike Bohn is gone.

Former Pat Haden was not a fighter per the NCAA. The onerous sanctions are gone but the memory of their impact is not.

This will work out, perhaps the athletic department has a better idea of what hidden trap doors are lurking under the carpet with regard to ‘NIL’ then Josh Pater does.

As Plow Horse noted get to ‘3 – 0’ and put the plane into ‘auto pilot’ with the WI and ‘the princess’ games as the sole match-ups of uncertainty. 8 weeks from yesterday – Sunday 1st September 2024 – it begins.

      2. Yeah I’ve been thinking, bottom-line, USC just needs show that they can compete in the Big Ten. Then recruiting will follow.

  5. Since Pete left, it seems USC football coaching has become a black hole.

Kiffin comes to USC, melts down, his marriage blows up, he gets tarmac’d, now successful at Mississippi

Sark melts down (literally), his marriage blows up, he gets Haden’d, now is sober and has Texas near the top

Helton was a humble position coach at USC, respected by players, becomes USC HC, turns into the village idiot.

Coach O is shown the door, he goes to LSU, wins a natty

Riley was highly regarded at OK, his Oklahoma recruiting classes were typically ranked 7-10, now he has a hard time winning and recruiting ranking is outside top 20.

What’s up with every HC in the last 15 years falling on his face?

    1. 67: Kiffin and Sark were probably too inexperienced at the time of their hire. Both learned how to run a successful program while coaching under Saban. And Coach O was very fortunate to get Joe Burrows from the transfer portal.

I still think they should have hired Urban Meyer when they had the chance even though he was awful with Jacksonville. College is a different game and he is a proven recruiter and winner. You can blame Carol Folt directly for that decision.

That Carol Burnett, we were lucky to have her, and that was vintage Carol after a young male teenager said his grandfather thought Carol was the most beautiful and sexiest girl in the world, and so Carol beckons him on to the stage and then fawns all over him in a sweet affectionate manner while the kid cannot believe what’s happening to him

  8. ‘Soviet raised a couple of points in the last thread, first, Brawny saying he wasn’t given much of a chance to show off his stuff at SC but missing half the season because he almost died explains why, and second, how the NIL is not only adversely affecting SC but other colleges as well not named Ohio St or Georgia

  12. Any of you guys read or watched what Paul Finebaum said about Lincoln Riley as reported on ‘McElroy and Cubelic In The Morning’?

    https://bit.ly/3VTklJn

Good night his comments are brutal per Riley and couple that with the acid Venables poured out last year I sense Riley will prove them both bluntly wrong.
