Lincoln Riley Offers Scenario Where USC Drops Notre Dame

Lincoln Riley did not back away from the idea of USC no longer playing Notre Dame.

Here is what he said at Big Ten media day.

“I would love to (keep playing Notre Dame). I know it means a lot to a lot of people. The purist in you, no doubt.

“Now if you get in a position where you got to make a decision on what’s best for SC to help us win a national championship vs. keeping that, shoot, then you got to look at it.

“And listen, we’re not the first example of that. Look all the way across the country. There has been a lot of other teams sacrifice rivalry games. And I’m not saying that’s what’s going to happen. But as we get into this Playoff structure, and if it changes or not, we’re in this new conference, we’re going to learn something about this as we go and what the right and the best track is to winning a national championship, that’s going to evolve.”

  1. LR has not a clue what it means to be a TROJAN. Anyone who bleeds cardinal red and gold would never be fooled into believing LR is looking out for anyone other than himself. His comments are not surprising.

  4. What a clueless unbelievable thing for any real Trojan to say let alone a football coach and horribly the head coach of USC. I backed Riley but this is an extremely telling insight to just how little he knows USC.

    If Wiley is thinking SC National Championship then the new playoff format is right up his alley where a 10-2 record probably gets you in. So a loss to ND in South Bend might not be as crucial as in the past

    Besides, this is the only ‘national’ college game so it belongs to the country not to Wiles

    Riley is clueless on SC. By beating nd, Sc has won a few championships. Beating nd is the road to winning championships. Riley needs to go. That is just as bad as Larry Smith and his comment.

    This is gonna happen, unfortunately. Though Notre Dame of course will then join the Big 10.
