Morning Buzz: Someone Finally Offered A Revisionist View Of USC’s Offense

This was entirely predictable. Once Caleb Williams left, someone would actually step forward, someone credible would step forward and claim his absence would actually benefit the Trojans.

Former Alabama QB/college football analyst Greg McElroy has game stepped forward to offer his theory.

“Often times, (Williams) played so much out of the system. And this not a negative. He improvised so much. He didn’t really stay true to what made Lincoln Riley an eight-figure a year head coach.

“I think they have four game-changers at wide receiver. I think it will allow Lincoln’s X-O acumen to shine this year as opposed to seeing Caleb run around and create magic the last two seasons.”

The last sentence is especially interesting. USC wasn’t able to reveal the true genius of Riley’s offense because Williams was running around improvising.

Maybe that’s because the offensive line wasn’t blocking well enough to let Williams run plays and forced him to create something.

Also, remember back to Williams’ freshman season at Oklahoma. How come the Sooners’ offense got so much better when Williams replaced Spencer Rattler a few games into the season? Rattler certainly ran the offense. So did Williams but things immediately improved with him.

Is McElroy saying Miller Moss staying in the pocket or being unable to create something out of nothing is going to be superior? This presumes a lot from the offensive line.

Here’s the bottom line: Do you think Riley sits in his office watching film of practices and thinks, “we’ll going to better off now that Caleb isn’t around to muck up the offense.”

  1. It is about tradeoffs. Williams is a generational talent, who either couldn’t find the first option 10 yards down the field, or just chose to go high drama because he knew he could.

Miller stuck to the game plan during the Holiday Bowl, without Marshawn Lloyd who averaged over 7 yards per carry. Miller delivered 23-33, 372 yards, 6 TDs, against a very good Louisville defense. That was the Riley offense. But the o-line needs to get better, and hopefully they will this year.

    1. One problem, Moss keeps looking over his shoulder because the kid on deck is the next coming of Marcus Mariota. Mavaia outplayed Moss in the spring game and sources say he’s been the better QB in fall camp.

There’s a reason why USC outbid Georgia. Mavaia is bigger, stronger, faster, and more athletic than Moss. He’s elusive outside the pocket and throws darts on the run, all things Moss is not.

Moss will get crushed if the O-line struggles, especially being a smaller guy with no wheels.

      1. I do hope Moss starts, simply because he knows the system better and the guy has paid his dues. If he can’t get it done then I am okay with Maiava taking the reins, heck I am okay with Jake getting a shot also.

  2. Despite Celeb’s penchant for doing his nails and undoing some of Wiley’s football plans, Wiles would take him back in a heartbeat

  3. Wolf should know after all these years that this years team will not look like last years team. They rarely ever do, so at this point in time every negative conjecture on Wolfs part is simply clickbait, as usual.
