USC Morning Buzz: I’m Back From Michigan With Plenty To Say

I’m back from Ann Arbor and going to attempt to tackle much of what happened on Saturday, where a glorious victory turned into a last-minute collapse.

Lincoln Riley literally pulled defeat from the jaws of victory as USC fell to a team incapable of throwing a forward pass.

  • Riley blew the game on the drive before Michigan scored its game-winning TD. He had a three-and-out that took one minute off the clock and included two incomplete short passes to Woody Marks.

This is a coach who continually demonstrates he knows nothing about game management in critical situations.

“I thought I could’ve been better,” Riley said. “I don’t think I called a very good drive there.”

How many more years will Riley need to coach before he knows what to do in these situations? It’s amazing how often he gets outcoached in these tight games but since some kid from Georgia committed, the homers are satisfied.

Another call that frosted me was 10 seconds into the fourth quarter. USC had a third-and-9 at the 11-yard line and rushed Quentin Joyner up the middle. Why not throw a pass to Duce Robinson in that situation?

  • Before the season, I was considerably less bullish than the rest of the media about the USC offensive line. Here is what I wrote for Lindy’s magazine back in the early summer.

“There are some huge questions, namely at left tackle where redshirt freshman Elijah Paige will start and right guard, where sophomore Alani Noa is the frontrunner.”

Both got yanked during the Michigan game although Noa later returned (Mason Murphy replaced Paige at left tackle and Tobias Raymond was the right tackle).

The media was very high on Paige, by the way. But he never started before this season and was unproven. Why would you think he would be ready to go without problems? Why didn’t you get a transfer portal tackle?

The offensive line was a shambles against Michigan. The Wolverines were led by star nose tackle Mason Graham, who even had his way against fifth-year senior Jonah Monheim.

  • Didn’t I say a couple weeks ago that Miller Moss always looks like he has a pick-six in him? Well, he threw one Saturday.

The media raved about how quickly Moss got rid of the ball during the first two games. Did it look like that against Michigan?

Apparently, I’m the only one who thought Jayden Maiava should have gotten a series or two against Michigan with his superior mobility.

It might not be the fault of Moss that he was under duress but sometimes you need to adjust during the game.

  • So the USC football team gained 1,400 pounds in the offseason. Did it look like it on the final drive of the game? Did it look like it on the 63-yard run? Did you see Bear Alexander on that play?

Michigan rushed for 290 yards. The apologists will say there were three explosive runs that were the difference. But Michigan cannot pass the ball. So the USC defense knew what was coming at the end of the game.

It did a great job preventing Michigan from getting a first down in the second half until the final drive. But that last drive was Big Boy football, with a fullback (a position Riley would scoff at using) and double tight ends.

Of course, the defense is better than last year. Why is that even an argument?

But what did it do in the crunch? How did it allow 199 yards rushing in the first half? That’s terrible.

I know that Michigan is a physical team but they averaged 3.5-yards per carry against Texas. The Wolverines averaged 6.3 yards per carry against USC.

  • I keep railing about the lack of a real special teams coach (not some upgraded analyst like USC currently has). What exactly is USC doing with Zacariah Branch? He seems to fair catch a lot of punts.

And at the end of the game, he didn’t try to return a kickoff that was about 1-2 yards into the end zone.

I’ve got plenty more to say and I will but this will be the end of this segment.

  1. The pick six was bad and the fact is the 3 long runs overshadowed a really good defensive performance. But I get tired of rushing average per carry. I heard Kirk Gibson talk about averages once…he said put one foot in a bucket of boiling water and the other in ice cold water, and talk to me about averages. USC will be fine and life will go on.

  2. I watched the Texas vs Michigan and Texas had no problem controlling both lines of scrimmage and the defense for Texas put a lot of pressure on the offense of Michigan which led to many turnovers that Texas capitalized on even in the Big House. USC’s improved compared to last but that bar is pretty low. Both Sark and kniffin are doing a better job of coaching than Riley. We have a long way to go before being considered a serious contender.

  3. I agree with wolfie for once, well maybe a second time…the lincoln was out coached and so was his staff…should never lose to a one dimensional team…just think the other B10 teams have much better offenses and just as good defenses…I don’t think my 10-2 or better is any longer realistic.

  4. Scott is “a day late and a dollar short” with his analysis, it has already been rough-shodded over by the posters. But it should be pointed out that the defense was tackling quite well until that 63 yarder, and Moss threw 3 tds and effectively won the game but for the defense’s 63 yard blunder

  5. Zacariah Branch was a blowout disappointment. Played scared with deer in headlights look. Fair catches with numerous green in front of him for big plays and better field position. His 4.4 speed looked like 4.8. Then the Big drop at the end. Bigtime players step up in big games. Total no show!

        1. Exaggerated victimhood is a common feature of narcissistic grandiosity.

        2. Narcissistic personalities often feel victimized because of their unrealistic expectations, hypersensitivity, and lack of empathy.

        3. Narcissists also play the victim to elicit sympathy and avoid responsibility for their abusive behavior.

See Gabby’s claim of victimhood below. Lack of empathy, abusive behavior, it all fits.

Let’s be honest here, after three games it’s obvious Moss lacks mobility and is slow-footed. He’s “MIMUS” 29 yards rushing the ball. He has never used his legs to move the chains or advance the line of scrimmage. He had numerous opportunities in the last game for some chunk gains. His QB play is hindering the efficiency of this offense due to mobility issues.

Can one of you Moss apologists find a Power 4 QB, through the first three games, that has rushed for minus 29 yards(total) and has yet to run for a first down to keep the drive going.

Speaking of hindering, Riley is having to limit his playbook. The strength of Railey’s playing calling, and all the previous QBs he coached, was the ability to run RPOs at a high level. Without the threat of the QB running the ball, this offense will sputter against the better defenses ahead. We clearly saw this already against Michigan

I am not sure how long Riley will stick with the loyalty thing, but the guy on the bench, Maiava, has more t00ls in his t00L box. The best QBs in football are dual-threat not one dimensional.

      1. What was needed was a 2024 version of the 1969’s Wild Bunch, which was essentially a 6 man front, with Jimmy Gunn and and Charlie Weaver playing what is today the edge position. The reason I say a 2024 version is because Gunn and Weaver probably didn’t weight more than 220 lbs, if that. But they were superb tacklers.

Moss played scared after a while. The second to last drive should have been Moss’ shning moment. He should have audablised to throwing the ball down field. The game was on his shoulders and he followed Riley’s lead which is not to lose the game. Riley better come up with some plays that have a fullback, two to three tight ends to block, and a rb or two to block or Moss will get killed. Oline was horrible.

Why didn’t USC run some of the same plays that Texas did? Because Riley has turned into Mike Leach. Stubborn and scared at the same time.

Anyway I agree with people disappointed with Riley and his clock management. It seems he’s using the clock management book left behind by his predecessor. He’s taking a page out of the bubble screen play book and the O line coach shouldn’t have waited until the freshman lineman was crying real tears to pull him out.
I looked at the many times USC beat Michigan and saw the obvious flaw in Riley’s offense. He doesn’t know how to use a power running play. We beat the Big 10 when we used real football plays like student body right. And if you think I’m pining for McKay just look at Reggie Bush and LenDale White.
