USC Morning Buzz: An Environment To Remember

If you get a chance to go to the next USC-Michigan game in Ann Arbor, I would encourage you to do it.

It is a first-class football experience. I don’t know why USC and Michigan rarely played during the regular season but this was always a place I wanted to see the Trojans visit (the last game at Ann Arbor was in 1958). It lived up to expectations.

It starts with the Michigan fans. They were one of the friendliest fan bases I’ve encountered in decades of going to games. That includes the students. Ann Arbor is jammed with students walking around the city the night before the game and a few approached us just to talk about USC and Southern California.

There was zero trash-talking.

That’s not always the case on the road. The laid-back demeanor of the fans continued outside the stadium Saturday during tailgating. Fans of both schools mingled and there was no obnoxious yelling or anything like that. It wasn’t like that just a few weeks ago when USC played LSU. Their fans were different.

This USC tailgate mixed in perfectly just outside the stadium. A few years ago, this same tailgate had its car tires slashed at Notre Dame.

  • Even inside the stadium, where it gets pretty loud, it was a very friendly environment. A sold-out stadium, the Michigan band, a huge student section and a terrific game makes it a great venue.

And it’s pretty close to Detroit, so there isn’t that 90-mile drive to make like when you go from Chicago to Notre Dame. Also hotel rooms are easy to get, another big advantage over Notre Dame or State College (Penn State).

Now there was one fan conflict I witnessed, but it was started by a USC fan.

  • With about four minutes to go, some Michigan fans started leaving. A USC fan near me repeatedly berated the fans, loudly yelling “You’re down 4 points with four minutes left and you’re leaving? What kind of fans are you?”

About 90 seconds later, Michigan tailback Kalel Mullings ripped his 63-yard run and eventually scored on a one-yard run.

USC got the ball back. But with 23 seconds left, this same USC fan inexplicably decided to leave and started walking down the aisle. And the Michigan fans let him have it.

Why wouldn’t he at least wait a few more seconds to save himself the humiliation?

  • Even though there were 110,000 people at the game last weekend, getting into the stadium was a breeze and you have to go through two checkpoints. I’m trying to figure out how you can wait longer to get into the Coliseum with 50,000 at the game than Michigan with more than double the crowd.

USC took a big group of athletic dept. officials to the game and I hope someone studied how Michigan gets fans quickly into the stadium.

All these people in this picture are coming toward the same gates and it wasn’t a problem

  • After the game, it was also easy to depart the stadium.

Before the game, driving to the stadium was also pretty easy. That’s not the case at someplace like Oregon, where the roads are packed and it can be a real hassle to park.

  • As you can see below, there is even Bob’s Big Boy, or Big Boy, at Michigan Stadium. There is also a restaurant in Ann Arbor.
  • Did you know there is a golf course across the street from the football stadium?
  • And the basketball arena was built adjacent to the football stadium.
  • The campus is huge and some academic buildings are surrounded by neighborhood houses. It’s hard to tell where the campus begins or ends. But it was nice to visit a campus where you could just walk on and didn’t go through a cumbersome security checkpoint.

I also heard this was a Michigan student who had visited USC in the summer.

  1. My first trip to Michigan stadium. Generally agree with your observations about the overall experience. Had not been seated more than five minutes when someone a few rows behind me yelled “USC means U Suck C*cks!”  Regards,DH

  3. That commentary about the Midwest Michigan people being so welcoming to west coast strangers says a lot about that part of the country, and they’re even fair in their political leanings with most states at 50-50

  4. Charming: I’m still amazed at the 24-hour vitriolic attacks on us, words filled with bitter criticism and sometimes malice. If they ever made ‘killing’ legal we’d be the first to go

      6. Except Trump was already president for 4 years, Cowardly Gabby, and withstood a Hillary inspired 4 year undemocratic coup by the Deep State FBI/CIA called Operation Crossfire that falsely claimed he was colluding with Russia. We know Trump will reverse the illegitimate Senile Joe/Kamala Deep State Regime and restore Democracy to America.

      8. Mueller was asked if he wrote the report himself —he said “no.” He was then asked if he read the “dossier” on which it was predicated. He said “no.” He was then asked if he even read the report [which was written by Andrew Weiss] —- he said “no.”

His attorney then asked if they could break for lunch.

  5. SC and Michigan didn’t play in the regular season after they signed a Rose Bowl pact agreeing to play only in a Rose Bowl game, which made the once-a-decade game more enticing
