Lincoln Riley Made A List But With One Big Caveat

Did you catch the chart the Big Ten Network ran on Saturday?

It was supposed to be favorable to Lincoln Riley but I’ve written before how it illustrates his shortcomings.

So what stands out in this chart? One thing: Lincoln Riley is the only coach without a national championship.

So let’s look at another way because Riley has only coached seven years.

  • Pete Carroll won 2 national titles in his first 7 years.
  • Red Blaik won 3 national titles in his first 7 years at Army.
  • Woody Hayes won 2 national titles in his first 7 years at Ohio State.
  • Frank Leahy won 3 national titles in his first 7 years at ND

Also: Does anyone think Riley will win national title in the next 2-3 years? Nick Saban needed nine years to win his first one.

Also, Part II: Those other coaches cared about defense and special teams.

  1. Winning a college football Title is now more difficult than ever and there will be no more Alabamas (and Saban) winning 6 titles in a short period. Unless a team is in the Top-4 of the Final-12 teams it will take 4 victories against top competition to win it all, and 3 games if you are in the Top-4

  2. CLR is an excellent OC when he has a mobile QB. If you look at the Heisman Winners he had at OU and USC, all three were pretty to very mobile; Baker Mayfield is pretty mobile, Kyler Murray and Caleb Williams are really mobile. It would be interesting to see a chart of big plays that were made with all three running around and buying extra time, instead of sitting in the pocket. What is most bothersome about what CLR is doing with Miller Moss is that he knows that his two tackles are suspect at best, and that makes Moss a sitting duck. How about using a RD or TE to chip or block on these edge rushers? Lastly, CLR still thinks offensive football is a 7 on 7 game. Against Minnesota, USC should’ve ran the ball until Minnesota proved that they could stop it on a consistent basis by dropping a safety into the box. Then you have one on one on the WRs.
