I’ve Been Waiting For This Defense Of Lincoln Riley

I just knew that Joel Klatt would not be able to resist talking about USC this week.

It doesn’t matter how many national stories are out there, when you work for Fox, you need to talk about USC. A lot.

And not critically, of course. Klatt did not disappoint.

“Some might say I’m being an apologist and that’s fine,” he said.

“It doesn’t happen overnight. Even though we see it happen overnight . . . with teams like Indiana. That’s still the anomaly.”

Hold up here. Klatt is saying not to compare USC to Indiana’s success. USC is in Year 3 under Lincoln Riley while Indiana is in Year 1 under Curt Cignetti. Shouldn’t USC be better in Year 3 than Indiana in Year 1? And why was USC better in Year 1 than Year 3?

“It’s also his first year without Caleb Williams . . . Isn’t this a bit of a reboot. This offense is incredibly young. They have a first year starter at quarterback,” Klatt said.

Now this is a reasonable comment.

But who said this on August 20th?

“This notion that their offense will take a step back is false . . . They’re not going anywhere. It hasn’t mattered what QB he has had.”

I’ll tell you who. JOEL KLATT!!!!

  1. Total B.S. Klatt. And I thought you knew the game better than this. USC has pissed away four games because of game mismanagement, pure and simple. Or did you forget that USC is paying CLR $10 million per year to be a mediocre coach at best. Let’s not forget all the perks he has demanded and received; new football only facility, closer parking space, closed practices after 15 minutes so no one can comment on the goings on. At this point I would gladly drive to Mississippi and pick up Lane Kiffin and bring him back.

    2. And some Trojans would like to see Rutgers put USC in the cellar of the Big 10 (other than Purdue) so the Riley era ends sooner than later. God help Lincoln Riley if he is still here next year and loses to Clay Helton.

  3. In 2023 SC lost big to Oregon, YUCLA and Notre Dame, whereas this year the team is losing small. Handicapper Klatt contends this is progress, that the next step is to start winning small which will lead to winning big. Klatt suggests we may have seen SC’s ‘floor’ this year

    1. USC doesn’t play Oregon and hasn’t played those other two teams yet. Losing 4 games out of 7 isn’t progress unless you are UCLA.

  4. So according to Klatt SC might be making football progress despite the close losses. There seems to be a better ‘feel’ with the team this year, more confidence that the defense can hold its own to a degree

It is a fairly common (and can be severe) mental illness: about 0.32% of the population suffers from it. [Let’s see. There were 331 million Americans in the 2020 Census. I don’t believe they diagnose it (for sure) until one’s late teenage years, so let’s apply it to those Americans and Traitors like Cowardly Gabby 18 and over. Google says that 258 million Americans are 18 years old & older: 258 million x 0.0032 = 825,600 people adults who suffer from paranoid schizophrenia, just like Cowardly Gabby.
