John Robinson, One Of USC’s Most Successful Coaches, Dies

Former USC coach John Robinson, who was one of the greatest football coaches in Trojan history has died of pneumonia in Baton Rouge, La. He was 89.

Robinson went 104-35-4 at USC and was 8-1 in bowl games.

He coached at USC from 1976-1982 and again from 1993-1997. He never had a losing record at the school and the Trojans won five conference titles and four Rose Bowls. Tailbacks Charles White (1979) and Marcus Allen (1981) won the Heisman Trophy during his tenure.

Robinson won the Pac-8 or Pac-10 championship and the Rose Bowl in three of his first four years at USC. His 1978 team was named national champions by the UPI coaches’ poll.

Robinson came to USC as John McKay’s offensive coordinator in 1972, coaching the unbeaten national championship team and the 1974 team that went 10-1-1. Robinson left USC for one year to join the Oakland Raiders but returned to USC in 1976 when McKay took over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He was the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams from 1983-91.

      1. Cowardly Gabby, thanks for once again revealing that you are really Charlie Bucket the UCLA Fan. You have wasted your life infesting this USC site for 2 decades because you loathe USC so much. You need involuntary psychiatric care at Atascadero State Mental Hospital.

      1. And yet it’s under Biden that approximately a half million people have died in the various conflicts that erupted ON HIS WATCH. Not to mention the thousands of homes, cities, including historical buildings & artwork that have been destroyed.

The bad guys of the world laughed at him when he warned them sternly, “Don’t.”

        Her stupidity is never ending.

  3. John Robinson rest in peace.! You will always be a great Trojan!

John, knew offense wins games, but strong defenses win championshipsm and although USC had talent he developed it, and truely was one of the great leaders of Trojan football.

Once he took over for John Mckay there was no transition period he truely knew USC football, and got it going right away in his first year with Vince Evans, Ricky Bell, Lynn Cain, Ronnie Lott, Marcus Dennis Smith. Rich Dimler John, knew football games are won with physical play on the offensive and defensive lines none of this flag football we see today at SC. Sadly, when he left for the Rams USC made a big mistake hiring Ted Toller which led to more mistakes as we all know until we hired Pete Carroll.

Great coach sadly when he came back the program had fallen tremendously under Ted Tollner. USC did not give him enough time to re-build it which I am sure he would have and should have probably been the athletic director later on.

We will miss you John as will the game of football. I sure hope SC appreciates what you accomplished immediately after we lost the Great John Mckay to Tampa Bay. It’s time for SC pays tribute to the man with a statute right in front of the Mckay Center he truely was a legend not John Mckay but came very close in my opinion.

Fight On JR!! Please say hello to Ricki Bell, Charlie White, Coach Goux and all the other great Trojans up in heaven. Thanks you for the great memories and continuing to build what John Mckay started.

      1. ’67, don’t forget zip and zap. I believe when Vic went in motion then spun behind the quarterback and reversed direction it was zip and the he reversed the second time it was zap. If my memory serves me correctly.

  4. You gotta love J Rob’s cardinal sweater and gold pants. Paul McDonald wrote a wonderful tribute, that I unfortunately can’t post, but he wrote about how everyone on the team knew how much he cared about them and that he expected the highest standards, and because of that, they would run through a wall for him.

  5. Mike Garrett where are you today, and I hope your big ego is now under control. You were admired as a running back at USC, but not as an athletic director for many reasons including the way you fired USC Legend John Robinson in his second tenure at SC after you pushed him to return as head coach, and restore a football program that was sinking very quickly. John, deserved more time in his second term at SC, and for sure better treatment, and ultimately what made it even worse you replaced a Legend with Paul Hackett. You made a good move hiring Pete Carroll which finally got the program going again, but the way JR was let go at SC along with some of your other questionable decisions as AD definitely put a black mark on the memory of #20 Mike Garrett- great running back….terrible person and athletic director.

I thought Gabby said a few days back that he was going to the USC marching band pep rally today at the Palms at 2:00 and wanted to “meet up” with Scott. Instead, he spent the day trolling the blog. Once again a threat followed by a no show. That’s our Cowardly Gabby. All talk, no walk.

    1. Mike Garrett’s treatment of John Robinson was mostly because of how John Robinson left USC with looming and then imposed sanctions to flee to the ‘Rams’. In addition Robinson worked the back corridors with AD Mike McGee to help get Larry Smith sacked – Robinson’s return as USC head coach was McGee’s last move.

Mike Garrett never forgave how Robinson ‘ran’ from the sanctions. The LAT article showed a mellowing by Robinson towards Garrett and vice et versa.

      1. The sanctions turned out to be for policies begun by John McKay and then continued when John Robinson returned in 1976. John hardly ran away any more than Pete did 27 years later.

      1. Here’s the problem:Cowardly Gabby needs treatment for her paranoid schizophrenia condition. It is a fairly common (and can be severe) mental illness: about 0.32% of the population suffers from it. [Let’s see. There were 331 million Americans in the 2020 Census. I don’t believe they diagnose it (for sure) until one’s late teenage years, so let’s apply it to those Americans and Traitors like Cowardly Gabby 18 and over. Google says that 258 million Americans are 18 years old & older: 258 million x 0.0032 = 825,600 people adults who suffer from paranoid schizophrenia, just like Cowardly Gabby.
