USC Morning Buzz: Lincoln Riley Traps Everyone

Sources tell me that USC athletic director Jen Cohen recently showed interest in the South Carolina job.

Now why would someone at USC be interested in South Carolina? The same sources said there is a feeling of being trapped at USC by Lincoln Riley’s contract, which prohibits the A.D. from doing anything meaningful.

It is also worth noting that Carol Folt — who hired Cohen — is retiring in June. Like coaches, athletic directors usually prefer to work for who hired them.

South Carolina hired Jeremiah Donati of TCU last week.

  • Riley talked about the transfer portal and NIL on the Trojans Live radio show Monday.

“The reality is there are just some guys that you either can’t or you’re not going to pay what they want,” Riley said. “If your value doesn’t match the money, it’s not going to go well much longer. It’s not going to go further.”

Is he saying USC couldn’t afford to keep Quentin Joyner? Exactly how many players deserve to get paid more than the tailback?

Here’s a thought: If USC didn’t have the money (which I question), then Riley should dip into his salary to make up the difference.

    1. That is so remarkably tone-deaf from LR. I agree with Scott, Riley should donate some salary to support NIL, given his performance is not commensurate with his compensation.

Except for Pete, USC has had only 7 seasons of 2 losses or less in the last 45 years. What that means is that about every 6 or 7 years, USC randomly has a good season. Otherwise, they are about an 8-5 team.

      1. 45-years, huh ’67, so we start with 1979, the end of the McKay-Robinson dynasty. There were a few good years, like the 1985 team winning the Rose Bowl, 1988 playing for a national championship vs ND, and of course the 2002-2008 Carrot Dynasty. And since then it was only the 2016 Sam team and the 2022 Celeb team

  1. With this new college football playoff system, there are 12 teams that can claim “We had a good year and we made the Tournament”

  2. Three players who were projected to start next season are in the portal.

The AD is looking round for a new gig.

USC’s ONLY hope is that the new president isn’t a bookworm who never played a sport in their life and cleans house starting with Lincoln Riley.

Donations are down due to a lack of interest in football as well as all the Woke crap not to mention Ho Lee Fook, Bhavatu Patel and Anwar Al Illbombya couldn’t care less about USC after they graduate.

    1. You are spot on Budda- these transfer students don’t give a crap about SC legacy. This issue is way bigger than LR- he just lucked into a huge contract that we are stuck with- but without strong leadership at the university level, that malaise just trickles down. This should be a case study MBA programs on how an organization should not run their business. It’s pathetic- and there is a reason Cohen isn’t saying anything- she has nothing to say.

  3. Scooter,

Can we get Riley to enter the portal? I did criticize Jen Taco Lita Cohen’s hire. I criticized her not saying a word about the SC football program. Now. she wants to leave. I am willing to help her pack. gotta get an AD that will stand up to Riley and rip him a new one. Tell riley to get out and recruit, tell him to play more physcial football, build your program from your recruits and fill it with portal transfers.
