Morning Buzz: USC Catches Big Break

Penn State paying Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles more than $3 million to be its defensive coordinator is a reminder that Penn State and Ohio State are both projected as top 5 teams for next season. Maybe top 3 to some polls.

And guess who doesn’t play either team: Lincoln Riley and USC.

Talk about a schedule break. UCLA has to play both but USC skips them. Remember that if Riley starts talking this spring or summer about the difficult schedule.

  • With USC playing UCLA tonight at the Galen Center, have you ever witnessed this great moment in Trojan basketball?

It’s a color film of the Trojans’ 46-44 victory over UCLA on March 8, 1969, on a jump shot by Ernie Powell with six seconds left to hand the Bruins (with Lew Alcindor) their first-ever loss at Pauley Pavilion after a 51-0 start in the new arena.

If you hit play, the video starts with 19 seconds left in the game. Watch the USC fans storm the court and lift Powell on their shoulders. Dick Enberg provides the play-by-play.

What gets overlooked is forward Don Crenshaw had a career-high 20 points for USC, nearly half the Trojans’ points.

USC had lost the night before to UCLA in double overtime, 61-55, at the Sports Arena so the upset wasn’t exactly a fluke.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

It’s time for another SCTV sketch, this one if Merv Griffin were the Sheriff of Mayberry.

  1. If money was the sole factor, USC would be on top with the highest coaching staff payroll. And D’Anton Lynn is getting paid twice as much as the new Penn State D-coordinator

  2. ucla’s basketball coach was complaining about recruiting and all the traveling required, how the colleges sold out for tv-money. Basketball travel is more grueling than for the footballers because of more games played

  3. When teams are successful they tend to lose their coordinators and other key personnel. ND lost their GM and defensive coordinator.

    1. Only if they don’t meet what the new team offers, otherwise you don’t lose them.

OSU & ND have tons of money, what didn’t they match the offers ?

      1. I think Al Golden of ND wanted to coach in the Pros and the Bengals offered him. Also rumors that he enjoyed Cincinnati more than South Bend. Don’t know about OSU. A couple of ND starting offensive lineman also went into the portal.

  4. Senile Joe and Kamala didn’t double check the ACLU’s list of “nonviolent drug offenders” and gave clemency to a drug lord in Connecticut who murdered an 8 year old boy and his mother to stop them from testifying.

    1. They’ve never cared about violence, when it’s their people. One set of rules for them. Another set for everyone else. You know, the way the dumbest person on this blog demonstrates!
