USC Morning Buzz: Jen Cohen Makes Strong Moves With Football

The USC football program is undergoing a transformation and it’s more dramatic than being portrayed.

Athletic director Jen Cohen, who has kept a low-public profile, is aggressively making moves behind the scenes.

Sources said Cohen hired new USC general manager Chad Bowden and gave him a mandate to run things.

They said Cohen is privately frustrated with Riley and the huge contract that Mike Bohn saddled her and the athletic dept. with when he hired the offensive genius from Oklahoma.

This is significant because it is a sign that someone see things clearly in Heritage Hall.

In a little more than week, Bowden has hired three people for the front office (Illinois director of player personnel Dre Brown; Notre Dame director of player personnel Zaire Turner and Wisconsin general manager Max Stienecker). And he removed executive director of football recruiting Annie Hanson.

Think about that?

Hanson has worked with Riley since 2017 and she is the wife of new offensive line coach Zach Hanson. Do you think Riley would remove her on his own?

Where do you think power truly rests? With Bowden or Riley?

In lieu of this, Cohen deserves credit.

Now, one normal response to all this could be it doesn’t matter because Riley’s got that huge buyout and USC cannot fire him.

But . . . what if USC quietly stripped away his power and made him miserable enough to leave for another job? He would have to take a job that paid less but he might agree to leave USC for a lower buyout than his contract states.

That would be a win for USC. And if Riley doesn’t leave, he now has Bowden supervising, which gives USC a better chance of winning.

  1. Riley is not going to like having a GM who won’t bow to him, the fact that Bowden canned the OL coach useless wife says everything.

    THANKS JEN !!!!!!!!!

  2. A GM is the new model in college football. I thought Riley’s decision to pay Jahkeem Stewart, an untested high school kid 2 million a year was a mistake. To put this is perspective, he is making twice as much as most starting quarterbacks in the BIG and SEC or any other USC player. Quintin Joyner left as well as Pregnon over money disputes following the Stewart payment. Someone other than Riley needs to be making these decisions. The GM model worked at Notre Dame who is not a top NIL program.

  3. Scooter,

Better yet, have Bowden fire Cohen and Riley since he is doing her job by watching over the football program and make him the AD. This is a disaster if you think about it because you are hiring more people that are doing Cohen’s job. Why does SC need her if he is doing the job?

  4. Wiley will not be voluntarily quitting SC. Where else is he going to grab $10-million per?–

And I doubt Wiles is worried about ‘Bow-down or Ol’ Jen’s egos. He’d rather fret over his team’s prospects

    1. Kudos to Clay for his willingness to come back to where he was fired. Though perhaps his AD didn’t give him a choice…

  6. Annie Hanson wasn’t removed. She just had a baby and is taking personal time to care for the newborn.
