USC Morning Buzz: It Wouldn’t Be Hard To Add Some Trojan Knowledge

It’s pretty obvious USC could use a coach who is a Trojan and has knowledge of the school’s tradition.

That doesn’t mean you just hire some former player who isn’t qualified and can’t coach.

One guy who has built a pretty good CV is former USC safety Will Harris, who played during the Pete Carroll era. He was just hired at Miami after being at Florida. Before that he was with the Chargers and he also coached defensive backs at Washington.

No one would question his qualifications if he got hired at USC.

But someone would have to value having a former Trojan on the staff first.

  1. I’m all for hiring ex USC players to coach, IF THEY CAN ACTUALLY COACH PLAYERS UP.

    Otherwise, no.

Riley hasn’t and never will embrace USC’s football tradition, it makes him feel uncomfortable and he gets pneumonia. Imagine having to live up to the success of McKay, Robo or PC, not to mention Henderson and Jones, Riley is in the same league as Helton or Tollner or Hackett.

  2. The number one problem that the USC football program has is that CLR refuses to embrace anything having to do with USC football before he arrived. That is why he has given the cold shoulder to prominent members of the USC football alumni, not paying respect to those who had a hand in building the program. I.E. Not going to the funeral of John Robinson. Not interacting with the students on campus and holing himself up in his office. Moreover, it is obvious why he left OU for USC to begin with. Was CLR that afraid of competing in the SEC? If that is the case that is not good for USC because that tells me he doesn’t want to be the best. USC is about playing the best to be the best. Lastly, the next time he mentions or even hints that USC should not play ND he needs to be shown the door.

  3. LR is 15-11 in the last two years, including several losses that should have never happened, and/or losses that were routs, including:

Utah in 2023 with their third string QB

losing to the gutties by 18 in 2023

losing to the domers by 28 in 2023

losing to Tulane in the 2024 Cotton Bowl

losing to Minnesota, Maryland, Udub in 2024

    1. Michigan and PSU shouldn’t have been loses either and the ND was very winnable if the dunce would just embrace having his QB run or even his RB’s run.

      1. I’ll add the ref swallowed his whistle on an obvious PI call in overtime vs. PSU that I believe was in the end zone. And ND was definitely a winnable game in 2024, the USC running game was very effective.

  4. To repeat, SC was in every game in 2024, so the team is not that far off from being ‘pretty good

And whether Wiley embraces the SC football heritage or not (certainly he’s aware of it) has no effect on his wins-and-losses

    1. Sir Lincoln of Riley’s refusal to embrace the glory and pageantry of Trojan football has resulted in unremarkable recruiting as compared to John McKay, JR and Pete Carrot.

  5. I think USC has very good defensive back coaches with DAnton Lynn, Doug Belk, and Trovon Reed. I am not impressed with the development of the wide receiver room and not sold on Zach Hansen coaching the offensive line. We really should be able to find someone with a SC background to coach these groups.

    1. KAM: Mayor Pete failed for four years to address the air traffic controller shortage due to federal DEI discrimination against qualified white Americans and refused to upgrade our outdated air traffic control system. and tries to blame you!

DON: The FAA alone has a staggering 45,000 employees. Less than 400 were let go, and they were all probationary, meaning they had been hired less than a year ago. Zero air traffic controllers and critical safety personnel were let go. Mayor Pete chose to use this amazing department—that is so critical to America’s success—as a slush fund for the green new scam and environmental justice nonsense. Not to mention that over 90% of the workforce under his leadership were working from home – including him. The building was empty!

DON: This affects faculty and students’ ability to engage in academic inquiry freely. Democrat run UCLA might be encouraged to shape their curriculum or research priorities that align with the interests of the Chinese government.

  7. -Just saw a publication that contends SC fans voted on who was SC’s greatest football coach, and Carrot beat out McKay, but one wonders if some of these “voters” were even alive during McKay’s run

    2. You would have to be close to 60 to remember the McKay era, at least to recall attending the games or watching them on TV. That era is long gone, as is what USC was in those days.

      1. True ’67, although Carrot did rejuvenate the SC football ‘brand, but since he left, SC has under-performed and been out-performed

      2. Pete was superb and he came at the right time, after so many crappy years and losing to the gutties so frequently. Sadly, the Reggie issue sullied Pete’s record a bit. Now we need a Pete Jr. as coach. I’m still hoping LR can get things turned around. Hopefully we can keep the new 5 start QB recruit and that Maiava works on consistency and reads.
