USC Morning Buzz: Coach Bowden Tosses A Bone To Sir Lincoln

Maybe USC general manager Chad Bowden should be called USC coach Chad Bowden.

He was a featured in a hype video the other day (instead of Lincoln Riley) and had a press conference for an hour yesterday (instead of Lincoln Riley). But it’s not surprising since he was installed by Jen Cohen (instead of Lincoln Riley).

But did you see Bowden’s attempt to throw a bone to Riley yesterday?

“He is, as a recruiter, the best I’ve ever been around,” Bowden said of Riley. “There’s two elements of recruiting. This is the first head coach I’ve been around who evaluates (prospects). So when I say recruiting, this is a guy who holistically can do it all.”

C’mon.

Bowden has worked for Marcus Freeman and Luke Fickell. Is he saying they don’t evaluate prospects?

Freeman was hired at Notre Dame the same time as Riley at USC. He just took the Irish to the national championship game. He isn’t trying to end the USC-Notre Dame rivalry. He’s a leader of men.

But according to Bowden, he doesn’t evaluate prospects.

Fickell took Cincinnati to the four-team College Football Playoff. He doesn’t evaluate prospects either?

  1. The bigger problem with LR is that he isn’t getting the most out of the highest ranked players he recruits and they subsequently leave the program (e.g. Duce Robinson).

    1. Welcome to NIL and the portal, even kids who are playing to their potential and getting coached up are leaving programs and it’s not going to stop anytime soon.

      1. NIL, yes, but to see how Robinson’s potential wasn’t used, he is 6’6″, 220 lbs, he is a bigger version of Drake Pittman. Robinson had just 23 catches last season, less than 2 per game. Pittman had 88 catches his last year at USC.

  3. Bow-Down could have been more clear in saying that Wiley was the best at recrutiment he’d been around, but obviously every head coach is going to be an evaluator of his ‘stock’

  6. Do head coaches evaluate every prospect? Wouldn’t it make sense to have some prospects evaluated by the position coach. I suspect that Coach Henny is a better evaluator of D line talent than Riley and Riley is better at evaluating quarterbacks and receivers.
