It’s something to actually be able to watch first-round games of the Big Ten women’s basketball tournament and men’s games next week. I can’t even remember when I last saw Pac-12 Tournament first-round games that were always on the Pac-12 Network.
USC plays Indiana at 9 a.m. PT today.
- USC’s Homecoming football game will be against Iowa on Nov. 15. Seems like a late Homecoming.
- USC baseball has a big three-game series vs. Oregon in Irvine this weekend.
- And now for some history:

- Quarterback Rob Hertel hands off to fullback Mosi Tatupu in the Trojans’ 49-0 victory over Stanford in 1977.

- This photo is from the 1969 USC-UCLA game at the Coliseum, best known for a controversial 32-yard TD catch by WR Sam Dickerson that enabled USC to win, 14-12. This photo features “Wild Bunch” defensive end Charlie Weaver (No. 84) and all-Pac-8 UCLA offensive guard Dennis Alumbaugh (No. 67).
A DIFFERENT WORLD

- Imagine being in Los Angeles in 1947. A crowd of 102,050 packs the Coliseum to watch the No. 4-ranked USC face No. 18 UCLA. If the Bruins win, there will be a four-way tie for first place in the Pacific Coast Conference standings.
If you weren’t at the game, you could listen to Frank Bull, who was considered “the dean of Southern California sportscasters.” Bull had done USC games since the late 1920’s.
USC won, 6-0, and here’s the play of the game as Jack Kirby catches the only TD on a Jim Powers pass as Benny Reiges looks on.

- USC wide receiver Malcolm Moore celebrates after scoring a touchdown in the Trojans’ 30-7 victory over Stanford in 1983 at the Coliseum.

- Look at how nicely USC did card stunts in 1956.

- The rosters in the game program for the 1947 USC-UCLA game featured a Perry Como ad for Chesterfield cigarettes. Remember, 34 years later, the memorable SCTV spoof “Perry Como: Still Alive.” Watch it here.
And I think that is singer Jo Stafford with him. She just happened to perform her NBC national radio show live from the Shrine Auditorium as part of the USC Homecoming festivities in 1947. Prior to the show, Stafford was named top female artist played on juke boxes by the trade publication Coinbox. By 1953, she signed a four-year $1 million deal with CBS-TV and by 1954 became the second artist behind Bing Crosby to sell 25 million records.

But the reason I’m interested in this roster page is if you blow it up, the game officials are listed with their colleges next to their name. That would never happen today.

- If you are a regular reader, you know I love USC’s basketball uniforms from the 1970’s and early 1980’s.

- USC forward Leonel Marquetti (32) and guard Barry Brooks (14) go for a rebound while UCLA forward Kiki Vandeweghe looks on in 1980
- Forward Bob Trowbridge takes a shot against Cal at the Sports Arena in 1976. The Trojans started the season 11-1 and were ranked No. 15 in the nation before losing 15 straight games.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

- It’s Türkan Şoray. She is known as “Sultan” of the Cinema of Turkey.

- And English actress Diana Dors.
Nice picture of Tirebiter the dog. But where is the present George Tirebiter?

DON: Makes it clear that without the stealing of funds they do not have the power to be a major party. Their ideas do not grow out of organic support but by major psychops created by money siphoned out of our taxpayer monies.

Sam’s catch wasn’t controversial. USC 14-12 over the gutties. USC goes to Rose Bowl and beats Bo Schembechler’s Michigan team, 10-3, and should have been National Champ. Nixon paved the way for Texas to win the Natty that year. Google “Nixon 1969 football national championship”. Scott’s moderator monkey denied the cut and paste of the article. Texas ran the wishbone, they couldn’t pass to save their lives, and good luck on TX running on the Wild Bunch if they had met each other. USC was undefeated, TX was 9-1-1.
