USC Morning Buzz: A Question For Chad Bowden

Has new USC general manager Chad Bowden expressed an opinion on continuing the Notre Dame series?

Bowden spent the past four seasons at Notre Dame. If he tries to pretend he agrees with Lincoln Riley that the series should reconsidered, he will no doubt anger people he knew at Notre Dame, not to mention any fans he might have interacted with in South Bend.

So a bit of a dilemma here. Bowden and Riley are trying to act like bosom buddies even though he was brought in by Jen Cohen to clean up the mess Riley created.

And while I would usually care less what a general manager thinks about something like this, I’m looking to see something more than the canned answers Bowden’s delivered since coming from Notre Dame.

  • UCLA coach Mick Cronin is a leading candidate for the Villanova job, according to reporter Adam Zagoria. Northwestern’s Chris Collins is also a top candidate.
  • Damaine Powell, a former USC basketball player and assistant coach, has resigned as the basketball coach at Loyola High School.

    DON: The man better be making 10-million a year for all the avalanches of criticism leveled at him.

    He had very good players at Oklahoma and took them to 3 straight National Championship games. Of course he had sensational quarterbacks. He may not be the best, but he’s not the worst. “The jury is still out”

  7. Damaine Powell resigned as the Loyola basketball coach. In my day that meant you had to teach an extra P.E. class or perhaps remedial math. Now the guys at elite Catholic high schools make really good money. Heard Rollinson at Mater Dei was making $500,000. The old Woody Allen adage no longer applies:

    1. My last USC gym teacher, Bill Harper, was one of the 3 best teachers I had at USC. He arranged a football game with one of USC’s intramural teams, made us do a 15 minute drill with chin ups, push ups and sprints and played soccer with us while he was still wearing braces from a jaw operation [asking us to stay away from his face]. I loved that maniac.

    1. Agree LJ. Some say size doesn’t matter but crowd size does. It is disheartening to watch a UCLA home football game with 20,000 people occupying a stadium intended for 100,000. I am surprised that any high school player with options signs with them under these circumstances. I’d rather play at Boise State or BYU where they appreciate football.

  9. Bowden is delivering so far, recruiting for 2026 is first, hoping they can hang on those guys. No more “rushing for the exits” like a couple of months ago.

    1. Agree 67: If we can go 9-3 or better, we will hold onto what is shaping up to be an epic recruiting class. About 2/3 are California kids and many are highly ranked offensive lineman. Everything we need for a physical smash mouth team is in this class.

      2. Domers and Oregon are likely losses this fall IMO, and Michigan could be as well, though that game is at the colli. The other nine games are winnable. 2026 is a more difficult schedule.
