Saturday Buzz: USC Outpays Football Powerhouses

It was overshadowed by Lincoln Riley’s salary a couple days ago, but Jen Cohen’s $3.1 million salary in 2023 was more than athletic directors at Texas, Ohio State, Alabama and Michigan made in 2024.

Now if only USC got the results for that salary.

I make the comparison because Cohen is getting paid enough to make some big decisions.

So why doesn’t she just tell Lincoln Riley that USC is going to continue to play Notre Dame and if he doesn’t like it, he can leave?

I suspect Cohen wants to continue the series but doesn’t want to stick her neck out on the decision. She might worry Riley is somehow right that playing Notre Dame is a mistake. Some USC fans are going for that nonsense.

They are ignoring the fact the College Football Playoff is going to make strength of schedule more important as a factor. And so far, so is Cohen.

It’s easier for her to resent Riley and say she is hamstrung by his contract than to just tell him what to do. She hired general manager Chad Bowden to do that.

  1. Mansions are inexpensive in Columbus, Ohio and Tuscaloosa, Alabama compared to LA. Ann Arbor and Austin, TX are more expensive that Columbus and Tuscaloosa, but are still way less expensive than living in the best parts of LA.

    1. Ohio’s state income tax for high wage earners like college football coaches and ADs is 3.99%, Michigan’s highest state income tax is 4.99%., Alabama’s is 5.99%, Texas has zero state income tax., while California has the highest in the land at 13.3%.

    2. ‘Ol Mule Shoe is 25-14 in his 3 years at USC. Leading up to his first season at USC he kept reminding the media that he inherited the roster and that they weren’t “his players”. Even during the season he made that comment a few times during interviews. That team that didn’t have his players finished the season 11-3 with a loss to Tulane in the Cotton Bowl.

‘Ol Mule Shoe followed that 11-3 season up by going 8-5 and 7-6 with “his players”.

Jen Cohen earned that $3 million dollar a year salary when she forced ‘Ol Mule Shoe to fire his boyfriend Alex Grinch.

Jen Cohen knows that ‘Ol Mule Shoe doesn’t fit at USC, but she’ll have to tolerate the idiot and his barely above .500 coaching ability for one more year before she can convince the Powers That Be at USC that it’s in the best interest of the program to fire his ass and move on.

USC is going to have to eat a huge portion of ‘Ol Mule Shoes contract, but at least the idiot will be up the hell out of here. He can take his B.S. air raid no coaching talent back to the Big 12 where his dumbass belongs

      2. At Commentary this month, Michael Woronoff reviews Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson’s new book, Abundance, and spots their passage on the joys of Democratic Party monopoly governance:

In a paragraph that could have been stolen from a Republican campaign consultant, the authors lament:

Liberals should be able to say: vote for us, and we will govern the country the way we govern California! Instead, conservatives are able to say: Vote for them, and they will govern the country the way they govern California! California … has the worst homelessness problem in the country. It has the worst housing affordability problem in the country. It trails only Hawaii and Massachusetts in its cost of living. As a result, it is losing hundreds of thousands of people every year to Texas and Arizona.

  2. Jen is the best athletic director USC has had in a generation. She has made excellent decisions with regards to the GM and assistant football coaches. The program is moving in the right direction. She deserves to be paid well. And Riley will not be able to opt out of the Notre Dame game. The big money donors will not allow that to occur.

  3. KAM: “Five people were running the country,” a political insider told the authors of the new book Original Sin.

Original Sin makes clear that even before he launched his first campaign against Trump, Senile Joe Biden was struggling. The authors write, “Those close to him say that the first signs he was deteriorating emerged after the death of his beloved son Beau in 2015”—a decade ago! Tapper and Thompson point to recordings from 2017 of Biden speaking with Mark Zwonitzer, the ghostwriter of his memoir. “Biden was really struggling in 2017,” Tapper and Thompson write, adding, “His cognitive capacity seemed to have been failing him.”

Three years later, on the presidential campaign trail, Biden’s struggles became more obvious to those around him. Tapper and Thompson report that, in 2020, members of Biden’s inner circle gave the candidate a teleprompter with scripted questions for a local-news interview. It was an apparent effort to work around his dwindling communicative and cognitive abilities: Aides lamented that even then, “they couldn’t rely on him to stay on message, and he often had a very short attention span.”

DON: Cowardly Gabby and Trans Bruin voted twice for a incapacitated senile old coot.

  4. KAM: The book’s most astounding previously unreported story from Senile Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign concerns his staff’s attempts to create videos of the candidate speaking with voters over Zoom. Tapper and Thompson’s description of this is worth quoting at length:

Biden would sit in a room with several monitors beaming the face of real Americans in front of him so that they could discuss issues of importance.

The videos came back, hours of footage. Some on the team couldn’t believe their eyes.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said a Democrat, who hadn’t seen Biden in a few years. “It was like a different person. It was incredible. This was like watching Grandpa who shouldn’t be driving.”

The authors go on to write, “Edited, the videos likely appeared fine to viewers, Biden no worse than any other senior on Zoom. But two of the Democrats who were involved in the films’ production together were dumbfounded. ‘I didn’t think he could be president,’ the second Democrat said. After what they’d seen, they couldn’t understand how Biden could be capable of doing the job.” (Two other top Democrats blamed the lousy footage on the awkwardness of Zoom.)

DON: The idea that this same man, only a short time later, was able to reliably prosecute the duties of the position to which he was elected is hard to believe. Indeed, some incidents cataloged in Original Sin suggest that Biden may have been struggling to do the job even early in his term. Cabinet meetings were “terrible and at times uncomfortable,” one Cabinet secretary told the authors.

  6. KAM:  From NBC News on June 19th, 2024: Why deceptive Biden G7 video kept going viral.

The misleading videos were an example of so-called cheap fakes, in which low-tech editing or other minor changes to videos, along with incorrect context, can amplify false but convincing messages.

The episode illustrated the dynamics of the new information ecosystem, in which tech platforms are hesitant to emphasize vetted, factual information during an election year for fear of appearing partisan — even as partisan operatives take advantage of the platforms’ attempts at neutrality.

USC’s Rick Caruso says how California Democrats run Los Angeles “is criminal” He says during the Pacific Palisades fires, the LA fire department equipment was so non-operational he had to lend his own equipment to the county :“The fact that we’ve got equipment sitting in mothballs because we don’t have the money to start the engines and have them working is just. It’s a sin. We were loaning our private equipment to LA Fire Department because their equipment did not have what it needed to have in order to put out some of the fires in the area. I mean, that’s just criminal. The amount of taxes that we pay in this city and the state, the Fire Department should be fully funded.”

  8. Scooter,

When is Cohen going to be the AD? Her actions show that she is timid, scared, an non difinitive. If she had to hire Bowden to do her job, then she is not needed. Her first step to cement her high paying position is to declare that SC will play nd for eternity. She will delcare that SC will make the playoffs this year and if not, then there might be changes made at the helm. She wants to be one of the big boys, but she is not. She has not earned that title. She needs to secure SC’s athletic dept with money, greatr players, and great coahes. She has failed. Jen Taco Lita Cohen needs to earn her money and get the job done.
