USC Thursday Buzz: Would Lincoln Riley Play UCLA If He Didn’t Have To?

John McKay had a famous saying: “There is nothing worse than losing to UCLA and nothing better than beating Notre Dame.”

Somewhere along the line, USC lost sight of that, mainly because it panders to Lincoln Riley.

What does he think matters? He doesn’t really care about playing UCLA, to be fair. But he knows he can’t end that rivalry because they are in the same conference.

This is a man who has zero regard for any USC traditions. I wonder if he were trying to dismantle one of the most famous rivalries at an SEC school, how many fans would support him? It’s appalling that a small minority of USC fans are supporting him in spite of his disdain for everything USC values.

What really needs to happen is a group of former USC players need to speak to Jen Cohen and explain to her the importance of the rivalry. They are really the only group that might be able to convince her, unless the donors react.

  1. If the people who fund the payola/NIL and new football facility turn off the spigot, Jen Cohen, Riley and the university President and trustees will get the message.

  2. KAM:I had a strong suspicion that medical schools wouldn’t become race blind after SCOTUS ruled against affirmative action. Old habits die hard. But I am surprised how obvious some of the schools like UCLA are being in their efforts to discriminate.

  3. After Kif/Ed O/Sark/Haden/Swann, everyone wanted people who didn’t have USC ties. This was a big thing.

Well, this is what you get.

  4. Hey Blogger,

How about a new weekly blog post every Tuesday or Thursday dedicated to a USC tradition. You can call it the Tradition Tuesday or Tradition Thursday post, like your weekly Friday Notes Column.

You can talk about any USC tradition – uniform number, traditional rivals and/or rivalry games, uniforms, pre and post – game activities in the Coliseum and on campus, Blood Bowl, etc.

Do it weekly until football season starts to educate the fanbase and put pressure on the HH admins to respect USC football’s traditions.
