If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

Brandon Arrington, the No. 1 cornerback in the nation, committed to Texas A&M on Thursday. At one time, USC was a strong contender for Arrington.

  • USC track coach Quincy Watts would have loved to get him too. Arrington won the high school 100 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays in April with a time of 10.21 seconds. He’s also basically a local because he is from the San Diego suburb of Spring Valley.
  • And now for some history:
  • Last week I wrote about how Gary Jeter and Ross Browner, the top two linemen in Ohio in 1972, nearly attended USC together until the Trojans told Browner they had given their final scholarship to Jeter.

Well, here they are together on the 1976 Playboy All-American team:

A UNIQUE RIVALRY

  • Here is another example why there are no other rivalries like USC-Notre Dame.

In 1948, USC tied the No. 2-ranked Irish, 14-14, before 100,571 at the Coliseum. Notre Dame quarterback Frank Tripucka got injured in the game and four days later was still at Good Samaritan Hospital in downtown Los Angeles.

That was when the boys on the seven-man football team at Immaculate Conception School, which is about a half mile from the Good Samaritan, showed up to wish Tripucka a happy 21st birthday.

They brought Tripucka a cake and a placard. Imagine the thrill for the 13-year-olds to meet the star quarterback, especially when Tripucka became a first-round draft pick (ninth overall) and enjoyed a 15-year career in the NFL and CFL.

Tripucka was the father of former Notre Dame All-American and Detroit Pistons basketball player Kelly Tripucka.

Immaculate Conception is still open and has been downtown for more than 100 years.

Several years later, he said, “It was the only game I’ve ever coached that I’ve replayed in my mind long after it was over. I still have that film and once in a while I’ll watch it again.”

  •  The day after Notre Dame played USC at the Coliseum in 1951, the Irish attended a brunch at Los Angeles Country Club hosted by Countess Estelle Doheny.

Notre Dame halfback Johnny Lattner, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1953 and the Maxwell Award twice (1952-53), was among those in attendance. 

Estelle Doheny acquired the title “Countess” in recognition of her philanthropy in Los Angeles. She was elevated to the rank of papal countess by Pope Pius XII. At the time, only two other American women received the honor.

If Doheny’s name sounds familiar, her husband, Edward, donated $1.1 million to USC in 1932 to build a library named after his son, Edward Jr. He was L.A.’s richest man and discovered oil at the La Brea Tar Pits in 1892.

Edward Jr., the 35-year-old heir to an oil family fortune, was found dead in 1929, shot through the head, at Greystone Mansion, his 55-room, Tudor-style home in Beverly Hills. His secretary, Hugh Plunkett, was found nearby, also dead of a bullet wound.

Authorities said Plunkett shot Doheny and then killed himself but there was never a full investigation.

Doheny State Beach in Dana Point is land Estelle and her husband donated to the state. And the Doheny Eye Institute is named after Estelle.

  1. Wonderful column, Scott. Great photo of the Immaculate Conception football team visiting the Notre Dame QB at the hospital [btw, if he couldn’t sit up he musta suffered a fairly serious injury]. I played on one of those Catholic School 7 man teams [Saint Joan of Arc]—it was called CYO football back then — I don’t know if they still have that league but it sure was a blast going around town to play everybody [Saint Timothy’s, Saint Mark’s, Corpus Christi, Saint Monica’s, etc., etc].

  3. 1968 USC-ND was not McKay’s best game. Irish schemed to stop OJ at all costs, which they did, I believe he gained only around 50 yards. USC was lucky to get the tie. Thankfully Sandy Durko had a pick 6 from Theisman.

  17. Those 2 ties with Notre Dame in 1968 and 1969 hurt because those were very good SC teams despite the fact that the ’68 team got beat soundly by Ohio St in the Rose Bowl for the National Championship, and the ’69 team featured the Wild Bunch but was hampered by a poor throwing Jimmy Jones
