USC Morning Buzz: Riley-Bowden Changes Continue

Let’s revisit the schism that exists between Lincoln Riley and Chad “Charmin” Bowden.

Among the many long-time employees for Riley is the “colorful” Clarke Stroud, who was his director of football operations at Oklahoma and USC. He has been so trusted by Riley he even hosted the Salute to Troy kickoff dinner.

Well, Stroud is no longer director of football operations. His new title is Executive Director of Player Development and University Relations.

That’s not a promotion. Sources said the new director of football operations is Dave Emerick, another Riley loyalist who used to be the general manager until Jen Cohen hired Bowden. At least we know what Emerick does now because officially it looked like USC had two general managers, which was a poor look especially when layoffs are being made.

All of this shows Bowden continues calling the shots. Remember he got rid of Riley’s long-time strength coach and also replaced recruiting personnel. It raises the question about how much everyone is on the same page within the program, in particular Riley.

    1. The D-line is better, the QB shoulda learned the offense by now, our receivers aren’t headcases [which Duce and Branch turned into —so many dropped balls], Riley is very happy with the running backs room — we should be better than last year …

      1. The USC Trojans have faced significant challenges at the running back position, with injuries and other issues leading to a lack of depth. This situation may force the team to adjust their offensive strategy as they prepare for the upcoming season.

        This isn’t the days of Charles White at TB and Marcus Allen at FB.

      5. You have to give the quarterback at least 3 seconds. He didn’t get that against LSU and Michigan. Agree that he didn’t have the foot speed we see in many Riley quarterbacks but I put it more on the offensive line than on Moss.

  16. It is an interesting discussion of Riley’s RPO and how singularly the TE is used, and the likely reason for Moss’s benching (he wouldn’t take off into the QB lane). One silver lining is that Riley’s RPO seems sufficiently different from what Maiava ran at Nevada that perhaps he will be much better prepared and familiar with Riley’s offense this year.
