USC Morning Buzz: Don’t Put Any Stock In Recruiting Rankings (Again)

A controversy erupted yesterday when tight end Mark Bowman of Mater Dei somehow went from five-stars to four-stars with Rivals despite being their No. 1-ranked tight end in the nation.

Bowman, a USC commit, was literally named a five-star by Rivals on June 2 so how could he be a four-star less than six weeks later (and in the offseason no less)?

A popular theory among some USC fans is that Bowman lost a star because of the bias of recruiting analysts. That overlooks the fact USC has sucked up to recruiting analysts especially hard this summer giving at least two (Steve Wiltfong, Tom Loy) personal tours of the football facilities.

That’s no doubt the work of USC GM Charmin Bowden. Wiltfong is On3/Rivals vice president so why would he be against USC right after being treated like a king?

More importantly, if you look up Bowman’s bio on Rivals, he is still a five star. He’s actually only called a four-star by Rivals for its Rivals300 articles.

So what gives?

Well, does this make sense? Bowman is ranked the No. 1 tight end by Rivals. But for the Rivals 300 rankings, Kendre Harrison of Reidsville, N.C., is the highest-rated tight end. Harrison is a four-star prospect and listed as the No. 3 tight end in the nation by Rivals.

So maybe they saw it didn’t make sense for Bowman to be rated below Harrison and decided to take away a star for the Rivals 300 rankings only. No, it doesn’t make sense.

  2. I know that Bowman reclassified from a Junior to a Senior. I wonder if that had anything to do with the fall in his ratings. If you watch Bowman’s film he is a five star. Very fast, cuts well, great hands and blocks incredibly well. He was Mater Dei’s best offensive player. USC opened the vault to land him – that is the best evidence of how good he is.

    Rivals bumped Luke Waffles from a four star to a five star and the number 8 overall player. He is another one with great film who USC paid a lot of money to get. Very aggressive and athletic.

    The biggest joke is Tom Tom, the interior defensive lineman from Mater Dei. If I recall, he wasn’t in the top 100. I think he is our most significant recruit. Watch the film of him hitting the sleds with Coach Henny and Nua. Explosive out of the stance, tremendous strength, good quickness and bend with a huge body. He is good enough to play right now. Mater Dei’s best defensive player.

      10. What’s your point. The inflation rate in 2022 during the Biden Presidency was over 9 percent. The cost of food and gasoline was through the roof. An inflation rate of under 3 percent is good from a historical standpoint.

  7. Mark Bowman might be the highest paid rookie TE coming into college football. Hopefully he will do well, though the article I pasted in yesterday shed light on how narrowly the TE is used in Riley’s RPO.

    2. I bet there were some conversation about TE usage during Bowman’s recruitment. He was initially set to go to Georgia, who uses the TE but switched to USC. Riley coached Marc Andrews at Oklahoma so he has some experience with elite TEs.
