USC Morning Buzz: The Fans Lose Out Again

Isn’t it amazing that the general public can go to Dallas Cowboys practices in Oxnard but you cannot attend a USC practice at Howard Jones Field?

Do you think USC has done anything the first two weeks of its training camp that is so valuable that it would be detrimental to allow fans to watch? If so, how do NFL teams allow fans to attend training camp?

The difference is the NFL teams see value in giving their fans a chance to see early practices. They also know these workouts are not giving away any company secrets.

But try convincing a college coach of that, especially when they have no reason to accommodate the fans.

Well, some still do. Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham allowed fans to the Sun Devils’ training camp and even allowed them to attend Saturday’s scrimmage.

The difference is Arizona State believes it needs its fans. Lincoln Riley doesn’t think he needs anyone.

  3. I don’t think they close practices because they are afraid an opposing team will scout their formations, ect. They already know their formation or will after the first game. I think it is to quelch any controversy over which players should start. A few years back Sam Darnold was lighting it up in practice with the scout team while Max Browne was struggling and people were calling for Darnold to play ahead of Browne. Coaches don’t like that type of thing.

    1. KAM: Somehow the much more successful Oregon football team holds open practices, allowing fans to attend and watch the team prepare. Specific details about practice times and dates can usually be found on the official Oregon athletics website.
