Lincoln Riley’s Anti-Notre Dame Game Argument Falling Apart

Some very interesting adjustments were announced today by the College Football Playoff regarding strength of schedule and strength of record:

  • “The current schedule strength metric has been adjusted to apply greater weight to games against strong opponents.”

And this:

  • “This metric rewards teams defeating high-quality opponents while minimizing the penalty for losing to such a team.”

So it benefits USC to play a team like Notre Dame and a loss to a team like Notre Dame will be minimized. Also, there will be “a greater penalty for losing” to a lower-quality opponent.

This smashes Lincoln Riley’s arguments/fears for continuing the series.

Do I think Riley will be persuaded? Probably not. Because his real argument is he just doesn’t like playing good teams. Period.

  2. No matter what metric is used, losing to Notre Dame most years is not the best way to qualify for the Playoffs

  4. There is always a college football playoff selection committee. And they have the discretion to select the teams that they want in the playoffs. Forget this analytics stuff. If the past is any indicator, they will favor SEC teams over those on the west coast. They don’t respect USC and never will. If USC goes 9-3 with loses to ND, Oregon, and Illinois they likely will not get into the playoffs even if all three losses were within a field goal. And if Alabama, Georgia, LSU or Texas A&M had a similar record against lesser opponents they would stand a better chance than USC of getting in. That is the reality of the situation. Having said that, stop complaining Riley and just play the ND game. That is what Pete Carrol did. Dominate your opponents.

  7. Another key in there is that there is now less weight for defeating lower quality teams. So maybe this is one small step to move the SEC away from playing a cupcake week instead of 9 conference games.

  9. KAM: The Smithsonian’s “Talking About Race Portal” stated that declares that declares that “objective, rational, linear thinking,” “quantitative emphasis,” “hard work before play,” and various other values are aspects and assumptions of whiteness.

The Smithsonian’s discussion on whiteness included the idea that rigid time schedules reflect a cultural norm that prioritizes punctuality and efficiency, often associated with white cultural values. This characteristic can create challenges for individuals from different cultural backgrounds who may have different approaches to time and scheduling, like showing up on time for class, an appointment or work.
