USC Finally Releases Depth Chart

Late last night, USC released its depth chart.

Here’s one thing that stands out: Neither Kentucky transfer Keyshawn Silver nor mammoth Georgia transfer Jamaal Jarrett are starting on the defensive line. Jarrett is actually third-string. Is he the next Bear Alexander?

The other news is true freshman Tanook Hines is the No. 3 wide receiver.

One mini-narrative from within the program is that less transfers are being relied upon. Well, the entire secondary and two of the three linebackers are transfers.

Another training camp chestnut is how coaches will talk up a player and then it isn’t quite reflected in the depth chart. For example, last week D’Anton Lynn said linebacker Anthony Beavers is “the guy that they listen to.”

Beavers is the second-string strongside linebacker and third-string weakside linebacker.

    Serious question, With Kiffin and Sark getting some seasoning and exxperience as a head football coach, do you think SC or its fans would take either one back to be the head coach for SC? They both have showed maturity as a head coach. That is, if they would want to come back. I think Kiffin would be a better selection between the two due to Sark’s lawsuit against SC. Let me know what you think. Thank you.

    1. PT, Sark is on top of the coaching world now at Austin, with a huge new contract. And Kiffin is getting paid almost as much as Riley, and I suspect he has a much better situation at Ole Miss than he would at USC, irrespective of the past baggage. IMO, the luster is off the USC job relative to many of the SEC schools, Ohio State, Michigan, Clemson, Domers. We got some bad luck with Riley, and USC won’t pay the buyout.

      1. Scott would be the happiest little boy in the world if Kiff came back….. it would give him the chance to get him fired again [it’d look just like that scene in “Madmen” where they hire a guy back just to have the pleasure of watching his face when they let him go again]…..

      2. Sark has the UT recruiting budget, limitless, behind him, the state of Texas as well as the South to recruit from and he’s won NOTHING.

        Kiffin is still a narcissistic prick, he can stay in the Mississippi swamp.

        SC needs a hard nosed SOB to be their head coach, maybe they can beg Saben to come out of retirement

  5. Lots of new names on both sides.

    Bryan Jackson looked really strong when he played last year at RB, a LenDale-style RB. But he is third string so Jordan and Sanders are (hopefully) exceptional

    1. I hope Riley makes use of Jackson when we get inside the 10 yard line —given his running style, he’s unstoppable from that distance.

      2. Riley strongly prefers experience in RBs. But how does a guy get experience unless he plays? Riley only goes into the bench when it is near the end of garbage time. Maybe the top 2 guys are really good, but then you have to ask yourself, why was one at U of New Mexico and the other guy at a JC? And why didn’t top 10 programs offer them?

      3. …AND…. we all saw what Bryan Jackson was capable of against Texas A & M [even if their defense was a bit depleted there were plenty of highly rated second teamers on [and backing] the line ….

  6. KAM: Apparently the public uproar of SC possibly cancelling Notre Dame paid off.

    DON: If you can believe the press, sounds as if the only impediment is when is the game to be played due to SC’s heavy traveling schedule

    1. ..And I think Jayden is gonna be that guy…. if he doesn’t take the number of hits Miller Moss took last year. Miller beat good Louisville and LSU teams —but he was banged up so badly by mid-season he couldn’t hit on easy 15 yard throws.

      1. Yeah Michael, we forget the toll sacks take on a quarterback. They’re basically sitting ducks.

        I saw this high school game last year when 4 guys hit the quarterback simultaneously. I thought how can this kid get up from that?– He didn’t

      3. Miller didn’t have the same arm he had against Louisville and LSU early in the season. Maiava has to make much better decisions and get rid of the ball faster than last year. He has had 9 months to absorb the playbook. Once we see him against a good team, we will know. The bad thing about playing Missouri State and Clay’s bunch is that he will likely have a lot of time in the pocket, which will develop bad habits. A friend of my wife’s family (former QB) works with Jeff George in San Diego on developing upcoming QBs. We were talking once and he said “We teach them just a few things. Move the chains-don’t turn that ball over. We time them, and the ball has to be out of their hand in 3 seconds. Don’t try to be a hero. And play Madden video football, it will help you with your reads. ” I watched a couple of kids he was working out a couple of years ago, the Columbia QB and the kid from San Diego who went to ND and last year was the backup (and who was the punter on the trick play and they passed the ball. The Columbia fellow had a better arm than the ND fellow, but the Columbia fellow was only 5’8″.

      4. Jayden is a very good player —when he’s playing loose [not to say he doesn’t make some bad plays]. He was showered with so much “Riley Knowledge” for the A & M game he almost became paralyzed in the pocket. Now that he’s not “cramming” I think we’re gonna see a VERY effective QB [who makes some –but not too many —mistakes].

  8. DON: Coach Urban said about the Ohio St newcomer quarterback, “Don’t mess up the game,” in other words, let your teammates do their thing, it should be enough

    KAM: Unfortunately SC’s quarterback Maiava doesn’t have that luxury. He will be expected to win games himself

    1. Saban for 3 years to turn it around, then have him provide some recommendations on whom to replace him. I don’t think he wants just to do VRBO commercials and play golf.
