USC Morning Buzz: Twelve Wins Or Nothing!

There is a segment of USC fans that are raising expectations — despite playing lowly Missouri State — so much that even one loss this season is going to cause them to be disappointed.

It’s a delusional segment of the fan base that seems to relish being in fantasy land. This is why they echo support for a weak schedule. They want to win and don’t care who USC plays.

It’s a lot different than when I grew up a USC fan and the football program made you want to be — and play — the best with games at Alabama and Oklahoma.

Or even the Pete Carroll Era, when he would call Urban Meyer and beg Florida for a game just to make the schedule harder.

Now the fans simply say they want USC to be like everyone else who plays bad teams. No standards.

  • One thing that is different this season is USC players all wore the same warmup suit before the game instead of everyone wearing something different. It’s billed as a sign of team unity.

The irony is the players are ones who made the decision because Lincoln Riley allowed them to choose how they would dress this season.

  • USC safety Bishop Fitzgerald said Monday night the game he looks forward to is Oregon.

“Playing at Oregon. Every kid dreams of Oregon, their jerseys, the stadium, all of that,” he said.

  • Miller Moss completed 17 of 25 pass attempts for 223 yards in his debut at Louisville that also included two interceptions, including a pick six against Eastern Kentucky.
  • USC is selling a limited amount of tickets today starting at $13 for the Georgia Southern game. Limited probably means however many people want to buy.

  1. Interesting that Urban didn’t want any part of playing USC back in the day of Pete.

I clicked on the link for $13 tickets. Tickets that are high up and around the 5 yard line are $73, including fees.

The $13 tickets might require as a side condition that you have to hawk churros at halftime.

  2. A segment of the fan base “doesn’t care who USC plays “and “supports a weak schedule.” I find that hard to believe. I can’ think of anyone who would not have preferred Ole Miss to Missouri State and people are going crazy over the suggestion of dropping the ND game.

    1. I actually like a schedule that eases into the Illinois game —- Georgia Southern is a little tougher than Missouri State, Purdue is probably a little tougher than Georgia Southern and Michigan State is a little tougher than Purdue. By the time we get to Illinois we’ll have played enough as a team to know who we are…. even though we won’t be battle tested…..that’s fine….we wouldn’t be battle tested if we played Ole Miss in our first game either…. neither situation is perfect but I like the situation we’re in just fine…

      1. The Trojans needed some national attention, and nothing generates national attention like scoring over 70, even if it is against mizzou state.

      2. Clay’s team was giving up something like 430 yards per game on average last season, including 600 or so vs. Ole Miss. So, the magic “70” is definitely in the realm of possibility.

      5. I guess Scott was right. There is a segment of the fan base that is fine with a weak schedule. I don’t agree with it. How do you evaluate players unless they go against real competition in a real game. “Gee Kameron Fountain is going to be a great pass rusher for us. He pressured the MO State quarterback all game.” Really? How do we know. Let’s see how he does against Michigan.

      6. I hear ya…. but he might have a better chance at Michigan if he gets a chance to build confidence and experience first…. I think this schedule might be preparing us for a nice run if we stay healthy….

  3. It is pretty tough on Wolf to come up with good material time after time. As comic Johnny Carson would say after a joke that had a poor landing, “Not all these are gems, folks”

  4. “Every kid dreams of Oregon, the jerseys, the stadium…” says a recruit. I don’t know about the jerseys, but the compact stadium is the loudest and oneness I have ever experienced

    1. So if Oregon offered him out of the transfer portal he would have gone there instead of USC. Kind of sounds like that. Some things you keep to yourself. “Every guy dreams of going to the prom with Julie but she already had a date so I asked you.”

  5. USC apparently lost a few votes in AP polling by scoring 73 points — the only way for USC to move up is to beat Illinois [which will probably be a top 10 team at that point] at Illinois…..

  6. Talk about a slap in the face, the Utes pile on the gutties at the Rose Bowl, and they don’t move up at all. It is almost like beating the gutties by 33 is a foregone conclusion…

    1. KAM: Tranny Bruin and Owns hardest hit.

DON: UCLA should have never left the friendly confines of the Pac 12. No amount of money will make up for the drop in national stature they are suffering. They are now a bottom feeder along with Stanford, Vanderbilt and Northwestern.

  7. KAM: Over the Labor Day weekend, former Democrat vice-presidential candidate Gov. Tim Walz demonstrated a disturbing interest in Trump’s health, proving that Mainstream Moderate Democrat leaders are willing to gloat over even the most absurd, unfounded rumors about Trump.

“You get up in the morning and you doom-scroll through things, and — although, I will say this: The last few days, you woke up thinking there might be news. Just saying. Just saying. There will be news sometime, just so you know. There will be news,” he said, dripping with an almost giddy anticipation.

In other words, Walz was caught up in the frenzy of false information and publicly rooting for bad news about the U.S. president with an enthusiasm that should shame any decent public figure. The governor’s manifest delight exemplifies how despicable it is to weaponize baseless rumors and cheer for someone’s potential misfortune or death.

Walz’s public comments betrayed a disturbing glee in the chaos. It is profoundly sick when a politician appears to revel in the speculation of a political opponent’s death. The spectacle was nothing short of a public debasement, a cynical joyride at the expense of common decency.

DON: How odd; Michelle Obama assured me that “when they go low, we go high.”

    1. Walz [and his frighteningly screwy wife] are really in a category beyond all known categories …. in fact, in philosophical jargon, they may represent the “grand category error”…..

  8. USC should be a top 5 school most years. And Stanford and UCLA should be top 15 schools. Academics, location, history, alumni, and recruiting base all favor these schools. But, it appears that college football is no longer a priority for Stanford and UCLA. USC was headed in the same direction until the donors cut off funding and Folt suddenly had a change of heart.

To hell with easing into a tough schedule. Tell that to Robinson, Mckay, and Carroll. SC has become pussified, just like bama, texass, and the other sEc teams. SC might as well join the sEc for playing a soft scheduele.
