USC Morning Buzz: One Area In Need Of Improvement

If there was one area where USC can improve this week vs. Georgia Southern, it is special teams (big surprise).

The Trojans got a delay of game penalty because they had only nine men on the field for an extra point and had a couple penalties on special teams. It doesn’t matter when you win, 73-13, but when USC gets into a close game, it could be a problem.

The extra point was a problem because players were too busy celebrating instead of getting on the field for the kick.

Good special teams hasn’t exactly been a hallmark of the Lincoln Riley Era at USC.

  • USC’s game at Illinois on Sept. 27 is officially a sell out. It is Homecoming for the Illini.

Illinois had two sellouts from 2011 to 2023. It already has three so far for this season.

  • Former USC offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker of the New York Jets will undergo season-ending surgery on his torn triceps, per ESPN.
  • Five years ago, a sparkling new Hyatt House hotel opened on the USC medical campus.

It offered families a hotel within walking distance of the university hospitals.

But the hotel is headed to a foreclosure auction after the corporation that built it defaulted on $61.5 million of debt.

  1. In the good news column, it looks like the Trojans did well with Bishop Fitzgerald, the transfer from NC State. NFL scouts graded him very highly for his performance versus mizzou state, and I believe they take into account the quality of an opponent. It wasn’t just the interception, but he seems to have an off the charts ability to see the field and determine where the ball is going.

      1. Yes, he seems to have flown under the radar. And the true frosh at LB, Polynesian name I can’t recall right now, also graded very high according to the scouts.

Maybe this year won’t be 7-5…

      2. 67 –Take a look at the whole range of college football publications’ unit rankings: Georgia Southern has highly rated units in all but the running back category.

Maybe this game isn’t gonna be the cakewalk people are expecting.

    1. One of the teams we play goes only by initials and another one has its name written in Latin….and we call them our “rivalry games.” Something doesn’t smell right.

  2. KAM: California Fires Released More CO2 Than All Their So-Called Climate Controls!

Wildfires in California have indeed released significant amounts of carbon dioxide, often surpassing the emissions reductions achieved through climate control measures. For instance, emissions from a single year of wildfires can be close to double the reductions made over many years, highlighting the challenge of balancing wildfire impacts with climate goals. -University of Chicago AI

    • In 2020, California’s wildfires released carbon emissions comparable to nearly double the reductions made over 16 years.
    • The carbon emissions from a single wildfire season can account for a substantial portion of the state’s overall emissions targets.
    • For instance, the emissions from the 2020 fire season represented about 49% of California’s 2030 emissions target.

    Conclusion

The emissions from California’s wildfires highlight a critical challenge to Governor Mimbo. While the state has reduced greenhouse gases, the  seasonal wildfires  negate these efforts, emphasizing  the need for comprehensive strategies to address wildfire management. Right now he is too busy campaigning for president while the state gets ready to burn once again this Fall!

  4. Proposed Ton-o-Hel pre-game speech: ‘Well men, you know what this game means to me. I coached at that school for 11 years and I would love to beat them. Is there anybody here that would love to beat them, if so, then let me hear you!

You have what it takes. You can play with these guys. Let’s go out there and show them
