A USC Tradition Continues (Unfortunately)

One thing that irritates me every year is the way some media hype up players in training camp and create the impression that the player will be vital to the team’s success.

To be clear, I’m not criticizing the players. It’s not them. They want to contribute. It’s the overeager media, often with the encouragement of coaches or others inside the program, who go overboard.

For example, offensive guard Micah Banuelos and safety Kennedy Urlacher didn’t even play against Purdue. Neither did center J’Onre Reed, the transfer from Syracuse. Defensive tackle Jamaal Jarrett, who had the pick six, was on the field for four plays.

Maybe they will play more this week but a lot was said and written in the summer and no one will go back and remember what they said/wrote.

  1. Beautiful portal work Riley. A center who doesn’t play, a OL that had no more eligibility, Jarrett plays THREE plays

You can’t make this sheet up

DON: Yes, every year we hear that nonsense.

  3. Which would you rather have – overeager reporters hyping players from the portal?

Or a reporter like Wolf who likes to post “I told you so” or “I knew it all along” articles because he always knew the problem before a coach recognizes it?

  4. Building up football prospects before the season begins is the same thing as building up a team’s possibilities before the first kickoff

  5. Besides, there are not always night-and-day differences between teammates, look at how Ohio St’s second-stringers last year are now first-stringers.

ALSO, some players look good in practice but not so much in games

    1. KAM: All Democrats had to do was to be fully against m u r d e r i n g someone for their political opinions. That was the moral test. Shocking how many seem to have failed it.

  6. I don’t recall the press or coaches building up Banuelos, Urlacher, Jarrett or Reed. The only one projected to start was Reed. The others were expected to be contributors and they are contributors. Banuelos played well in his one start. The problem is that USC closes its practices and everyone is tight lipped about the program so reporters and others speculate.

  7. DON: Did you see where this sports commentator, his name is ‘Frankenstein or something, anyway he’s quoted as saying “SC is humming”

KAM: I know the guy, he says things that are debatable like for example he once said “When the Pac-12 came to the Big-10, there was this sense, “Oh, those West Coast schools. It’s big-boy football”

  8. DON: And Alabama’s Saban saying about the college transfer Portal that some restrictions should be applied to the players’ freedom to move all about at will

KAM: I saw that, where he’s quoted regarding the Portal: “It’s not great for you trying to manage a roster. And it’s probably not great for the players in terms of the next place they go”

DON: Right. Leaving a college for another is a lot of stress just packing up and moving on, and effectively starting over with a new team

What we are witnessing is an outright abuse of power. This administration is attacking critics and using fear as a weapon to silence anyone who would speak out. Media corporations — from television networks to newspapers — are capitulating to these threats.
