USC Morning Buzz: Michigan Uses Southern California Connection

Michigan will practice at the Chargers’ facility on Friday before playing USC at the Coliseum on Saturday.

I guess they have an in there with Jim Harbaugh.

Michigan better hope its defense plays better than the Chargers did against the Commanders on Sunday. The Wolverines are a 2.5-point underdog.

  • Prosecutors upgraded a charge against Mark Sanchez on Monday to a felony battery charge, according to Fox 59 in Indianapolis. The charges previously were all misdemeanors.

Sanchez has three Indianapolis lawyers — Jim Voyles Jennifer M. Lukemeyer Tim DeLaney — representing him. A judge granted a motion to waive an initial hearing. Sanchez’s lawyers intend to enter a plea of not guilty.

A pretrial court date is set for Nov. 4. Sanchez was still in the hospital as of Monday morning, according to Fox 59.

  2. Sanchez pulled a 69 year old truck driver out of his vehicle and proceeded to slam him against a dumpster. The driver thought Mark was going to kill him and pulled out a knife to defend himself. All of this is on surveillance tape. It warrants a felony charge. This will end Sanchez’s broadcasting career. It will cost him millions. He is now effectively unemployable.

      1. I was thinking the same thing MG. He obviously had some weird reaction to a drug and alcohol combination. Wind sprints behind a hotel dock at 12:30 a.m? Telling the police he had no idea where he was and what happened. Perhaps he can suggest that someone slipped something into his drink. It’s the best defense under the circumstances. Maybe he can make an argument that he had no control over his behavior and mitigate the punishment and civil damages.

        And I don’t think that Sparrow is necessarily correct that Sanchez has no insurance protection because his acts were intentional. That is the general rule. But, a creative civil attorney can always plead the case so that an unintentional act is contemplated such as a third party spiking his drink, or a bartender violating the law by serving an intoxicated person. That alone may be enough to get his civil legal fees covered under the policy but covering a judgment is probably a stretch. I once worked for a firm that represented the heirs of Artie Mitchell who was shot and killed by Jim Mitchell and was convicted for manslaughter and Jim’s insurance company covered all of the legal fees and most of the damages in the civil action. It can be difficult to nullify the insurance coverage in most actions.
