Afternoon Notes: USC Becoming Tight End U.?

Josiah Jefferson, who is rated the No. 1 junior college tight end in the nation, has committed to USC.

He was previously committed to Utah.

Is he going to play behind Mark Bowman, the Mater Dei tight end who rated the No. 1 prep tight end in the nation?

  • Should I add Kalen DeBoer to the list of coaches who have done better than Lincoln Riley? He outdid him at Washington even though they were hired at the same time and now is outperforming him at Alabama in Year 2.
  • Can anyone imagine Lincoln Riley doing this with USC fans after a game?

  1. To be fair, I don’t recall anyone in 2021 saying we should hire Kalen DeBoer from Fresno State. The choices were Luke Fickell, who turned down the job, and Dave Aranda. Both have underperformed. It is very hard to find the right coach for a program. Other than Pete Carrol, who was the A.D’s third pick, we haven’t made a successful hire since John Robinson No. 1 in the mid seventies.

I still think we should have hired Urban Meyer in 2020 but the politically correct crowd would not allow it. That is part of the problem. Many of the best coaches have baggage.

The Texas A&M celebration was magic. But that kind of demonstration doesn’t happen in Los Angeles. Our fans are more concerned with the after party.

  2. Joey Olsen and Walter Matthews will likely hit the portal. Too bad. Matthews was 6’6″, 280 lbs. with a 39″ inch vertical jump. You don’t find those measurables every day. Shame that USC wasn’t able to develop him.

  3. Iowa has a heck of a team. Even with the game in LA, it will be a major challenge. Easily could lose two more games, would not be surprised if 3 more games lost.

DON: The timing couldn’t be worse.

Platner has been in damage-control mode since acknowledging on Pod Save America that a skull-and-crossbones tattoo he got nearly two decades ago “while drunk” bore a disturbing resemblance to the Nazi SS Totenkopf, the skull emblem worn by Hitler’s elite death squads.

    2. Can’t get over it? It hasn’t been announced yet.

It’ll be somewhere between $27-54M. A lot of money no matter where it lands. But it sounds as if he is taking responsibility for having fallen short. As I stated yesterday, Riley sure wouldn’t!

  5. KAM: Democrats have badly weakened their party with left-leaning ideas and rhetoric, growing only with self-described “white liberals” while losing ground with other voters, according to a new center-left group’s report shared first with Semafor.

The group, called Welcome, consulted hundreds of thousands of voters over six months for its broad findings, including that 70% of voters think the Democratic Party is “out of touch.” Most voters, the group found, believe the party over-prioritizes issues like “protecting the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans,” and “fighting climate change” while not caring about “securing the border” or “lowering the rate of crime.” (Welcome began as a PAC in 2022, then founded a nonprofit with the same name for political research.)

Elected Democrats will receive copies of the report after its Monday publication, followed by events to promote it in DC and New York. The report urges party members to abandon some of the progressive language about race, abortion, and LGBTQ issues that Democrats began using after the 2012 election — and recommends the nomination of more candidates willing to vote with Republicans on conservative immigration and crime bills.

That’s probably solid advice, and nothing Bill Clinton didn’t run on in 1992. But it comes from the same people saying things like this further down in the report:

The report doesn’t urge Democrats to move fully to the right, reserving vocal praise for several progressive stars in the party with a more direct appeal to economic opportunity and lower cost of living.

“We have much to learn from the relentless focus of Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Zohran Mamdani” on those fronts, the authors write.

    1. KAM: There are numerous stories of teachers and people associated with schools who are getting canceled—meaning fired—for saying horrible things: essentially being happy, or saying it was justified, that Charlie Kirk was assassinated. What do you think about that? People are losing their jobs all over the place.

Well, let me tell you the thing that is most shocking about that. The most shocking thing is that the people who spoke out that way believed they wouldn’t get fired. I think they were all surprised, which means they’ve been living entirely within a bubble in which they thought other people would agree with that. Are you kidding me?

They thought they were in the bubble of reality where—let’s say that Hitler was an American and he died—would you feel bad about saying, “Thank God Hitler died”? No, you wouldn’t, because you would assume that almost every single person would agree with you. So it would be easy to say that.

These people are saying it in public for the world to see, as if that’s what a normal person would think. How hypnotized would you have to be?

So, in my mind anyway—and I think I’ve said it online at least once—I think of these people as the “hypnotized Hitlerians.” You can drop the “hypnotized” if you need to. But the Hitlerians are people who live in this little world where they think Hitler actually came to power in the United States because so many bad people on the left have been saying that. People should know better.

    1. KAM: Flatulent Mainstream Moderate Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell, who passed gas during an interview with Chris Matthews and had an affair with a Red Chinese spy, demanded that any Democrat presidential candidate in 2028 must pledge to demolish Trump’s newly constructed White House ballroom. Smelly Swalwell’s call came in response to Trump’s privately funded $250 million ballroom project, which he somehow portrayed as an extravagant misuse of resources that future leaders should commit to tearing down.

DON: The Mainstream Moderate California Democrat suggested this pledge as a litmus test for 2028 nominees, emphasizing opposition to my architectural additions to the White House. Stinky Swalwell’s statement faced mockery from Twitter posters, who labeled it as “ridiculous” and indicative of TDS over my successful initiatives.
