Some Imporant Things To Remember Regarding Lincoln Riley’s Future

Since some people are throwing his name around for jobs, just a few things to remember about Lincoln Riley.

  • His buyout is not $60 million if HE leaves. Only if he gets fired. He would need to pay USC some money if he left.
  • Would Riley, who does not like to compete, go to the SEC? One reason he left Oklahoma was because they were moving to the SEC.
  • Would a rabid fan base (like LSU) accept a new coach who has been a disappointment at his current job?
  • Is Riley motivated to leave because he isn’t thrilled with his relationship with Jen Cohen or the fact she hired general manager Chad Bowman over him?

    Riley is Helton all over again. We have another six years of him if he stays. People like budda, so cal, Plow horse, and maybe you might not be around. And we want all to be around in six years.

    BTW, Scooter, who did you put into your trust to take over this blog when you go see Jesus? Will somebody else do the great work that you have done or will it end? I hope someone takes over. I enjoy this so much.

  3. Agree with Scott. I don’t see Riley going to a big time program with a rabid fan base. He doesn’t appear to have the stomach for it. He wants to go to a school with an easier schedule. Where the expectations are not that high and he can spend more time with his young family. Of course, he will need to take a substantial pay cut but he may be willing to do it. Or perhaps he would be interest in taking an offensive coordinator job and/or quarterback coach for a major college or the NFL ala Chip Kelly.

  4. Let’s help LR find a school that suits his needs, because obviously, USC is not it. At first blush, I think any school in the MAC or WAC would work. Or perhaps a canvassing of the NFL for QB coach openings where he might be a good fit. We should definitely get an employment agency on that pronto. Corn-Ferry, where are you when we need you?

    For USC though, we need a relatively young HC, with possible exceptions to be made of course, who knows sound football fundamentals and isn’t afraid to go out and recruit locally. Ideally somebody who can start from a blank-slate meritocracy approach to building a staff, particularly on the defensive side of the ball that has been lacking for so long at USC. I’d also highly recommend bringing Ed Orgeron on in some role on the DC side, and offering Norm Chow and advisory role on the program to the OC. Its a blueprint for success…

  5. Why would he leave? He makes $10 million with no real pressure to produce because he can’t be fired for a few years. $10 mil and no accountability? Endless news conferences about how SC is about to turn the corner? (On the other hand SC has no reason to appease Riley by canceling ND. Don’t like it? Leave and pay us). No school is paying him $10 mil with his recent performance. We are in a bad marriage where the couple can’t afford to divorce.
